Ah the good old days

Laura must have been bored, because she's bothered to type up an article (from Select) about The Good Mixer...

The GM acquired near-mythic status  as blur's mid 90s bolthole of choice. (What's a bolthole? Am I being dumb? Does he mean a bollock hole? - C)

"Graham Coxon still comes in every now and then" says landlord Michael Hurley,  who has resided over the boozer since 1984. "But he's off the drink at the mo (aug.99) so he's not been in for a while."
"Damon doesn't come here much now though," adds a local. "In the past 3 years I've only seen him about 3 times". (Gawd, does this 'local' spend every waking hour in the place?!!-L)

The list of bands who used to go to the Mixer would fill several pages, but it was Blur- ever since 1992, when food Records moved in round the corner (we've been there too! -C) - who brought fame to this corner pub more ordinarily frequented by old men (haha-L), making it akin to a Britpop HQ.

"We had TV cameras in every mag", (erm does he mean photographs?! -L) Michael recalls. "And, to be honest with you, it brought a lot of unsavoury characters along as well. When you have such a big crowd of people you're bound to get one or two. It peaked in around 95 when blur were vying for no. 1 with oasis. We had a lot of Japanese tourists coming in, you couldn't walk down this road. I knew it couldn't last. The hype moved on to other places. That couldn't go on. The police wouldn't have let it carry on. (blimmin eck- L) People were literally blocking the road." (Boy how things have changed!-L)

Nowadays the crowds have thinned and, although tourists still crowd in the doorway for photos (we should've done that, hehe-L) the pub has returned to something like its pre-britpop self , although Neneh Cherry & Fungus are among the present clientele. (who?!-L)

Indeed the pub's interior - free pool table and wood paneling - remain unchanged from its moment of glory.
Are the locals still here? "They never went away!" Michael laughs. "Theres always been a mixture, it's not as busy as it was but it's okay. " Aww.
