| Random Thoughts Finding a good engine builder. Many people will tell you that in order to build a fast engine, all you need is a summit catalog. Find a builder who is into Stock/Super Stock racing. They build with calipers not catalogs. Screw solid flat tappet cams. I've lost three motors in three years all to solid cams that took a shit. Two of them during break in. I've followed instructions to a tee. When they go you get this real fine metal powder EVERYWHERE. Main bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, rings, hone job. Is it really less expensive than a roller? I used to think that power was all in the heads and cam. I never thought there was power to be found in the short block. WRONG. There is tons of power down there. You just gotta know where to look. Reduce friction, keep things from deflecting out of shape. Lots of tricks like teflon coated cam bearings. Low tension piston rings. Block fill. Without the timing chain attached, my short block can be turned BY HAND. How's that for friction reduction? Screw Steve Bartman. I don't care if it wasn't ALL his fault. I want to blame SOMEBODY and damn it, I have that right!! I hate carpentry. |
