Tag Art Tutorial - Project 4
Making Your own Tags

This tutorial will be about making your own tags.  There are times when you want to use a tag for your artwork, but maybe you want a different color or you just don't have any tags to start with in the first place.  They are really easy to make and I will show you how for this tutorial.

There is no right way to do this, but I hope that this will help you find the best way for YOU to make a tag.  I am by no means an expert when it comes to making tags, rubber stamping, or anything else, as a matter of fact.  These are the basic steps that I go through when I sit down to make a tag.  I'm just trying to share my love for art and making tags! :-) (Yes, I'm saying this again!)

If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail me.

Step 1: Decide on Size of Tag
Step 2: Choose Paper
Step 3: Measure and Cut Paper
Step 4: Add the Hole for Fibers, etc.

Step 1: Decide on Size of Tag:  The size of your tag is determined by what you want to do with it really.  Do you want the typical-sized tag or something bigger, maybe smaller?  Decide on the shape of the tag that you want.  Rectangle, square, triangle, circle, anything you want!   If you will be making a lot of tags, in a special shape, it might be helpful for you to make a template.  Templates are very easy to make from quitter's template plastic that you can find in the fabric section.  Just trace your tag onto the template with a Sharpie marker and then cut out.

Step 2: Choose Paper:  I like to use a good, sturdy cardstock is the best for tags, because it is able to hold your embellishments well.   If I am using a light-weight paper, I layer it on top of a coordinating piece of sturdy card stock.

The easiest way for me to choose what kind of paper I want to make my tag out of is to first decide what kind of color scheme and decorations I am planning to put on to the tag.  For example, if I  had picked out a clipping from a magazine of a lady standing on the beach,  I might choose to make the tag from a color that is in the clipping- the  color of the ocean, the lady's dress, the sand.....etc.

Step 3: Measure and Cut Paper:  This one is easy!  Just use a good  straight-edge or template to trace the desired shape onto the cardstock you're using.   Then, cut out.

Step 4: Add a Hole for Fibers, etc.: Another easy step.  Use a ruler to measure where you want to add the hole and use a hole punch to punch a hole in the top of the card.

Here are some ways to spice up the hole in your tag:  PUNCHES!!!  Punch out a piece of coordinating cardstock/paper and then use a hole punch to add a hole in the center of the punchie.  Adhere this to your tag and then use the hole punch and punch through the punchie hole, making a hole in the tag.  Punches come in a lot of different shapes and sizes.  Experiment with them and have fun!

Another nice, tailored look is to cut a thin, rectangle piece of coordinating cardstock/decorative paper, fold it in half and adhere it to the top of your card where you want the hole.   Then, use a hole punch to make the hole through all layers of paper.   You could also use this idea, but with a triangle, diamond, square, etc. :-)

This is the first time I've done a tutorial without using any photos.  I hope that I have explained things well enough here.  Making a tag is very simple and by making your own tags, you have the freedom to choose whatever you want to make the tag out of, the size, shape, anything you want!

Take care and I hope you enjoy my next tutorial:  a tag with a stamped, vellum overlay. :-)
