We started Home "Learning" about 4 years ago when my youngest son was having trouble in public school. He literally cried every morning that he didn't want to go. I was concerned and had a meeting with his teacher. She told me that the other children didn't play with him and he basically would go off in a corner and play by himself, and he didn't want to do anything as far as learning goes. So, I thought this was not for him and he wasn't benefitting at all from being there so I pulled him out. I kept my older Special Needs son in public school that year, but I eventually pulled him out as well with lots of prayers and guidence from the Lord. It was exactly what he needed too. They both have blossomed so much and low and behold wouldn't you know it they are thrieving and learning! When we first started I thought I had to go out and buy so many materials on the market. I had to have structure and we used a canned curriculum. They struggled with paying attention and retaining the information. Now we do things differently. I let them pick a topic they are interested in and we pull it all together in a Unit Study. They love it and so do I! We also do alot of hands-on-learning, field trips, projects and just learning from the real world. |
