    Lem Worley Killed

Lem Worley, age 43 was killed at the T. A Bates place here last Wednesday by Deputy Sheriff James Castillo and Brad Lair.
Worley had been in town all afternoon. He walked out of the Roberts restaurant and went down the street with a pistol in his hand. He went to the Brown restaurant and told them the officers were after him. They persuaded him to leave, and sent word to the officers.
He went across the street and then into the Bates yard and back porch.
Sheriff Lair and his deputies and Marshall Shell Green surrounded the building and were looking in the hedge for him. When they flashed a light he began shooting, firing four shots. Castillo and Brad Lair returned the fire, hitting him in the chest which caused his death a few minutes later, while he was being taken to a doctor's office.
Fourteen shots in all were fired. Worley married a daughter of Sam Abbott, and is survived by his widow and eight children, three of whom were married. He had worked for the Stearns Coal Company in McCreary County for several years. He lived in Draughn Hollow near Spann, and was on his way home from work.
