Yard Operations
With all the activity that takes place on the mainline, its easy to overlook the many photographic opportunities within the Steamtown yard itself.  Static displays and historic buildings can be used as an effective setting while photographing Steamtown's operationg equipment..
A night photo session at the roundhouse in July 1995 yielded this classic line up of Steamtown's motive power along with Reading and Northern 425.
A restored 13 stall roundhouse and turntable are the centerpiece of Steamtown yard operations.  Here we see CP 2317 and Baldwin 26 poised for another day's work.
Although the turntable looks like a holdover from the steam era, it is actually a replica installed in 1992. CN 3254 passes the north wall of the 1937 roundhouse as it begins the days activities in 1996.
Striking a classic pose in 1994, the 3254 looks as if it could still be working on the CN, especially with CN 5288 posed in the background.
Short train rides are handled by the 26, a 1926 Baldwin Locomotive Works plant switcher, seen here stopped at the restored Lackawwna Station Hotel in 1995.
There are several restored freight cars in the Steamtown yard that can provied effective period backdrops, as this 2001 scene depicts.
The setting sun highlights the running gear of Baldwin 26 while it makes up a Santa  special in 1998.
Occasionally a locomotive from the Delaware-Lackawanna Railroad will make its way into the Steamtown facility for display, such as former DL&W 426 seen here in 2001.
One days when more than 1 steam engine is out and about, Steamtown actually takes on the appearence of an engine facility of decades past, as in this 1993 view.
One most not overlook Steamtown's operating diesel, ex NKP 514, restored to its original livery in 1998.  In this 2001 view, the 514 is seen on Bridge 60 giving caboose rides. The 514, like all Steamtown engines usually faces east.  However, fresh out of the shop in 1998, the 514 was faced west, affording this view by the old Mattes St. Tower in Scranton.
Prior to being repainted in 1998, the 514 was adorned with faux DL&W  lettering that was applied in 1986.  Here we see the "old" 514 with CN 3254 in 1996. The 26 often playes a key roll during special events, as it is the only operating American steamer in Scranton.  Here she switches a train of restored military vehicles in 1996.
In 1995 and 1996 the Reading Northern 425 was often used on Steamtown excursion trains.  Here the 425 is seen returning with an excusion.  For more photos of the 425 click here.
Here the 2317 has pulled some cars from the excursion train seen at left and is proceding to the coach servicing area.  Both shots from the summer of 1995.
