Athearn/MDC 2-6-0 with a Small Scale Logistics laser cut cab, new domes, stack, headlight, generator and builder?s plates added.
This conversion went with me to a meet in Nov-07 and ran flawlessly for 3 or 4 hours. The electrical pickup from the tender and all six drivers helps. |

This loco was built with an old AHM Mini-Trains Plyouth shell and a chassis from the Kato Pocket Loco series yellow electric locomotive. It's a simple conversion: |
Remove the body from the Kato locomotive Remove about 1mm of material from the motor housing sides and slightly more from the front and rear screw posts. Check the fit of the shell and remove material until it fits onto the chassis, but tightly enough to be held on. Add details to your taste. The chassis only is available at www.nscalesupply.com as of Sept. 9, 2006 |

This is an old picture of a Chivers Forney on Bachmann chassis. I tickered with the chassis once too often so it wouldn't run reliably. It ran well until I "fixed" it. The Chivers superstructure will be used for the project below. If you use a Bachmann chassis I recommend the notes on the HOn30 mail car about tuning it to run "like a Swiss watch". Those tips and adding the fly wheel per Bob Bennett's Moder Railroader article made it run well. I think the remotoring kit from Nigel Lawton would help as well but I am only half-way done re-motoring a chassis so I cannot speak from experience. Others have indicated that it improves the running characteristics 100%. |

Here are some pictures of the railbus on the front page showing the mechanism. The front truck does pick up track power. To get detailed instructions on building it see the article in the Maine 2 Foot Quarterly, Fall 2002. See the links page to get this back issue. |

Chivers Forney body waiting to be fitted to a Kato N scale C-11 2-6-4T chassis. The last driver has been removed to make it a 2-4-4T. For more details on this conversion refer the Pieter Roos' article in the Spring 2002 issue of the Maine Two-Foot Quarterly. Click on the image to see the full size image.
Narrow HOn30 C-16 cylinders have been added to the chassis in October. Pictures to come. |
