Ezel Presbyterian Church was built in 1964.

Ezel was a little city on the west side of Morgan County. Ezel starts at the ridegetop settlements that go to Frenchburg. A high plain with pretty flats.
When Ezel was first founded it was called Mortonville, after its founder Morton Pieratt. Mortonville expanded and a post office was set up an run by Elie Pieratt, Morton's father, when the townspeople decided to change it's name.It is not known just who thought of Ezel,, but someone remembered the story of David and Jonathan, and the stone of Ezel, and thus the town was named.
In 1925 the Presbyterian Church founded the Ezel High School, this school was run by the church until 1961 when it was sold to the county.
The area around Ezel is rolling and fertile, with good farms, and the people live well. Mr Dilliard Murphy says the population around Ezel is unequaled anywhere in the mountains of Kentucky.
In 1925 Ezel had two churches, four general stores, two garages, two filling stations, and a jewelry shop.

Jericho house at Ezel

The Jericho house was built about 1891 by Dock Cockrell who came to Morgan County from Breathitt Co. Nine of ten brothers came from Virginia. Benjamin Franklin Cockrell was a descendant of Simon Cockrell and Polly Smith. One of eleven children and trained to be a physician, he preferred instead the life of a country gentleman. Dock built his house and setteled down to live the good life at Jericho, in Morgan County and known at one time as Murphy post office. This house is built of white pine hewn logs. from Red River section of Wolfe Co.. Originally the house had stone chimneys at each end, a balcony, and a one room addition on the back. The main house of dressed logs has been rebuilt near Elliottville, in Elliott County.

This barn located on Rt. 460 in Ezel is one of the last barns standing with the Mail Pouch advertising on the side.
