| There are many skills to be developed in order to play the game of volleyball. First, the serve is important. If you can not serve the ball over the net, the other team immediately scores a point and gains possession of the ball. There is the underhand serve, the overhand serve and a jump serve. When serving under hand, make sure that you lean over and hit the ball with the heel of your hand in a forward direction rather than in an upward direction. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| With the overhand serve, make sure that you toss the ball over your head, and not too far in front of you. If you toss the ball too far in front of you, you lose power and the ball will likely hit the net. Make sure that you have the opposite foot forward to your hitting hand, and lead with your elbow and your lower arm and hand hit the ball like the hammer of a gun. In the photo, you see the ball "presented" so that you can hit the ball with the flat palm of the hand, with the fingers comfortably relaxed giving the ball extra support and guidance. Try to hit the ball with no spin, called a "floater", like a "knuckle ball" in baseball. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The next part of the game which is argueably the most important part of the game, is the reception and pass (formerly called the "bump"). The things to remember here, is to keep the knees bent with the feet apart and the elbows straight with the arms stretched out. Let the ball bounce off your wrists and "point" the wrist in the direction you want the ball to go. A good team can easily lose a game of volleyball if they aren't passing well. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| To the left is Patty, from the Four Seasons. She is demonstrating the block. Her hands are apart, but close enough together to stop the ball from coming through. Make sure that your hands are angled so that the ball will hit off your hands and onto the floor of your opposing side, not out of bounds. To the far left, you see an attack hit. The ball has been hit off the block and hopefully flew out of bounds resulting in a point for the attacking side. Make sure your body is angled so that your follow-through hand doesn't hit the net. |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Above to the left, you see a man attacking the ball with what is known as the "spike". The key to a good spike is the approach and the arm swing. If you were asked to stand still and jump up as high as you could, you'd plant both feet together, and swing your arms in a big pendulum motion. Well, that's just exactly what you need to do when you're going to spike the ball. You approach the net from an angle so your hand doesn't hit the net after the hit. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| To the left you see a "cupped" hand hit. You could also hit the ball with an open hand. The palm of the hand strikes the ball with the fingers giving the ball guidance like the edges of a funnel. Make sure that your hand "hits" the ball, and doesn't follow through on the ball or you'll be called with a "held ball". Also, if you follow through with the ball, you'll be more likely to hit the net resulting in a foul and a point for the other team. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Another aspect of the game is the "volley". The ball is a sphere. I just thought I'd mention that, 'cause many people contact the ball as if the ball was a flat surface. It is a sphere, so position your hands to receive a spherical object in your hands. Your hands are apart and make contact with the ball on the side of the ball, not on the end of the ball. You should have good control of the ball, so you could grab it, and hang onto the ball if a "coach" asked you to. Look up at the ball. If your hands were too far apart, the ball would come through your hands and hit you in the forehead. Remember to receive the ball at your forehead if possible, not over your head. When "setting", make sure to extend the arms to their full extension. Bend your knees so you contact the ball high. Don't keep your hands in contact with the ball too long, or follow the ball, or you'll be called on a "held ball". | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
