DEAD TREE WITH LAKE
20" x 24" Acrylic on Canvas

This painting sort of evolved as I went along.  I wanted to try a new style of sky first of all and I think it turned out ok.  Then I painted the red trees and the background and the lake and the red trees were definitely the focal point of the painting.  Finally, I painted the big dead tree in the foreground and I think the eye is actually more drawn to it than the others.  At first, I was going to paint a taller tree, but didn't like the way it was turning out.  The mist coming off of the lake was a final touch that just made the whole thing more interesting (although my wife has convinced me that it is the wrong time of day for the mist).  This photo is a little dark, but if you look closely, you can see some shapes of rocks under the water near the shoreline.
