Photograph taken from Seminary Ridge looking westward towards McPherson's Ridge at Gettysburg National Military Park. To the right center is the famous McPherson Barn where Stone's Brigade was stationed on July 1st, 1863. The woods to the left center are the Herbst Woods - scene of the Iron Brigade's attack on Archer's Brigade (site of General Reynolds' death). Later the Iron Brigade would hold this woods against Pettigrew's attack, finally falling back to Seminary Woods across these field with Scales and Perrin's brigades in pursuit.

The wargame of "Action Along Cashtown Road" from Fall-In 2000 in Gettysburg, showing the same basic scene as above only in miniature. The large barn and farm complex in the right center is the McPherson farm. In the center of the picture is the Herbst Woods. Cashtown Road (Chambersburg Pike) runs along the right of the picture diagonally to the far center, with the 1st and 2nd railroad cuts north (right) of the road. To the far back of the picture is Herr Ridge, lined with CSA artillery of Pegram and McIntosh's battalions.

To the left is a shot of Pettigrew's NC brigade splash across Willoughby Run and attack the 24th Michigan of the Iron Brigade posted on West McPherson's Ridge (trees have been removed for the picture, but this entire area is wooded). Pettigrew's attack was smashed in the wargame, and a follow-up assault by Perrin's Brigade also failed to carry the woods.
