LEFT - Custer's 5th Michigan Cavalry dismounts and advances towards Witcher's line. Horseholders stay in the rear behind a fence on the Little farm. Just ahead of the 5th Michigan (by the branch of the creek) are skirmishers from the 1st New Jersey, 3rd Pennsylvania, and Company A of the Purnell Legion of McIntosh's Brigade of Yankees. They are already engaging Witcher's men. Just beyond Rummel Farm, Chambliss' rebels are mounted and ready to attack the Union position (BELOW)

ABOVE - With the 5th Michigan and McIntosh's skirmish line beaten back by Chambliss's attack, Custer sends in the 7th Michigan. Hampton and Chmbliss counterattack and push them back as well. Custer gallops down the Low Dutch Road, finds the 1st Michigan in reserve and yells "Come on you, Wolverines!" as they race forward through the Howard and Lott farm fields.
ABOVE - Custer personally leads the 1st Michigan as Fitz Lee's 1st Virginia ("Black Horse Cavalry") slams into them. McIntosh leads the rest of his brigade forward on Lee's flank as Hampton still mills around. Chambliss retires to the rear. Custer's attack pushes back the Rebels to the Rummel Farm (top right of the picture) where the battle fizzles out.
