Elmina Castle
Elmina Castle is described as
the first known European
structure of fortification in
Ghana. It was built by the
Portuguese in 1482 and was a
trade centre for ivory,
gold and later slaves. It was
captured by the Dutch in
1637 and later purchased by the
English in 1872.
Fort Saint Jago - Elmina
The Dutch built this castle in
1637 after capturing the
Elmina Castle. It primarily served
as a military protection
for the Elmina Castle and, unlike
other castles,
not used in slave trading.
