Saskatoon,
Saskachewan. Methodists from Ontario founded this city in 1883, as the
capital of a
temperance colony. This idealized
life did not
catch on and twenty years
later there was a
population of only 113 people.
The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) brought an influx
of settlers. German, Ukranian,
Scandinavian and
British settlers gave the
town new life. Those
early years are recalled
each summer with a
Pioneer Days celebration
and at Boomtown
Saskachewan, the Western
Development Museum,
where there is a restruction
of a street of 1910
complete with pioneer bank,
Chinese laundry and
railway station. Saskachewan
is noted for its wide
streets, trees and water,
as reflected in this
picture of the Bessborough
Hotel on the South Saskachewan River.
A
pioneer church at North Battlefield, Saskachewan, an
interesting historical
village of the 1925 era, which is a
branch of the Western
Development Museum. Across the
valley of the North
Saskachewan River is Battlefield, once
a capital. The
latter's National Historic Park has its
focal point
a restored North-West Mounted Police
station.
