Interview with Scott Cain thanks to - HNFM Live - May 2002

HUGEmusic: What made you audition for Popstars in the beginning?
Scott Cain: I just thought that I'd be able to do it and I did ... all my firends told me in the last two series that yeah you can do that dude and I'm like yeah I could probably do it and then the time came around and I went for it.

HUGEmusic: Had you ever auditioned or thought about auditioning in the previous two episodes?
Scott Cain: I was like living in Port Macquarie, so all the auditions were in Sydney and I couldn't be bothered driving down to Sydney for the auditions and at the time for this one I was in Perth and the auditions were right there so I went for it.

HUGEmusic: With "Im Moving On" being written by an outside person, did that make it hard to make the song your own?
Scott Cain: I kind of sang it and got into it and yeah tried to feel it and it feels good.

HUGEmusic: Now you've released your debut single, have you started working on your next single and your debut album?
Scott Cain: Not yet Im just doing the promo tour now and then when I get back to Sydney I will be working on the follow up single and the album will come out later this year.

HUGEmusic: What sort of production are you working with on the album? Like R&B? Pop?
Scott Cain: I dont know - we're going to look at a few songs that they've got and I'm going to do a bit of writing and co-writing as well... try and develop my own sort of style.

HUGEmusic: Have you written any songs before or do you have any song writing experience?
Scott Cain: I've written one hip hop track about skateboarding which is pretty good and Im hoping to put that on the album.

HUGEmusic: Who will you be working with?
Scott Cain: Heaps of work with Nick Howard he did the Superstition track and the When I Need you track on my single, he's actually married to my manager, Sloane, so I can just go over there whenever I want now and use their studio and yeah its pretty cool. So I'll be working with him and Warner's people I guess. Whoever they want to bring in for me... it's great... its great having all these connections [laughs].

HUGEmusic: Your single is now one of the most requested songs on radio, did you have any expectations on how the single was going to do?
Scott Cain: Yeah because of the hype of the tv show and that, like for the last two series both their songs went number 1 and mainly because of the tv show and the hype of it all, I really didnt care - It would be good to have a number 1 hit... actually it was on Rage this morning and I was just like yeeeeaaaahhhh I'm on Rage!!!

HUGEmusic: Finally made it?
Scott Cain: Yeah! [laughs]

HUGEmusic: Fellow Popstars winners Bardot and Scandal'us both landed the number 1 position in the first week of release with their debut singles, do you feel you have a hard act to follow?
Scott Cain: No Im not trying to keep up with them. I met Anna from Scandal'us yesterday... she's so beautiful [laughs] it was good to meet her... I have met Daniella, Anna, Jason and Tiffany from Bardot.

HUGEmusic: Did you find yourself listening to Bardot or Scandalus or it just wasn't your scene?
Scott Cain: Not really, I liked Bardot's music... a couple of their new songs but they've kind of split up now. It was like poppy and fun!

HUGEmusic: So what have you got playing in your cd player at the moment?
Scott Cain: I listen to a bit of Van Morison, Ben Harper and I usually listen to mix cd's... 'Soul Of Mischief', David Bowie!

HUGEmusic: You've been under the spotlight for the last couple of weeks, from what you've experienced so far, is fame what you've thought it to be?
Scott Cain: Not really its like a lot more hard work than I thought it was going to be ... I thought it was going to be all ... I didnt really think it was going to be all just fun and glamourous and everything but I get home now and I'm that buggered just from all the talking and doing interviews and having to do the performances and I just collapse. Its like emotionally exhausting... it is!

HUGEmusic: Have you spoken to your friends since the announcement? What do they think of it all?
Scott Cain: Heaps of mates are going to the instore today so their gonna hook up with me today.

HUGEmusic: Where are you going to base yourself? Sydney?
Scott Cain: Yeah thats pretty much where its all happening at the moment 'cause the record company's there and I've got access to studio's and stuff. Thats where I get it all happening, the party scene - good skate scene.

HUGEmusic: As far as your new career goes, is Australia your priority or are you itching to get overseas and 'conquer the world'?
Scott Cain: Im not itching... Im not like going lets get over there Im just like doing what im doing here I guess and just enjoying it for the moment. But if I get to go overseas it would be fantastic 'cause I've never been overseas before.

HUGEmusic: Whats the best part of it all? - have you been recognised when you're walking down the street?
Scott Cain: Oh yeah everywhere... thats one of the best parts - people get excited when they see you it's just like you've made their day just by waving to them and thats pretty cool.. the fact that I have a career in the entertainment industry is cool 'cause its doing something I've always wanted to do - and I've got all these doors that have opened up like i can do maybe television, stick with my music or make movies - I want to make my own skate video - skate part acting part filmclip ... yeah skate musical [laughs].

HUGEmusic: What would need to happen to make you feel like "you've made it"?
Scott Cain: I dont know... I guess one day I'd like to play at a big concert.... singing a whole album and having a lot of people come and listen to it.. I don't know if that means you've made it but that would be fantastic.. I don't really think of it as making it anytime... it's just doing it - it's just doing it for the love of entertaining and just enjoying it while it's happening and keep it happening!

Scott Cain: Musially?
HUGEmusic: Yeah!

Scott Cain: Auuggghhhh there's so many - I've always lloved Michael Jackson growing up as a kid... I used to thought all his stuff was awesome not so much these days, but still good - he's in a league of his own, a world of his own... another band I like at the moment is Coldplay... love Van Morrison, love Rick James is good, I like Dean Martin, I like Chilli Peppers... Im all over the place - I love everthing... if it's a good song then I like it.

HUGEmusic: What does the future hold for Scott Cain, where can you see yourself in say ten years time?
Scott Cain: World Domination! [laughs] ... run for Mayor while I'm still popular... Nah I still want to be doing something like this. I wanna be making movies I think ..its what I really want to do... telling stories tell good stories and put up world peace.
