Popstar's Secret Baby, Continued...
24th May @ 11.55pm EST
The little girl sprawls on the floor, playing with a box of champagne. It's a gift to her dad from his record company, congratulating him on his single going straight to number one. To fans of Popstars- who voted little Zoe's ada Scott Cain the winner and propelled his single I'm Moving On to the top of the charts- Zoe is also a surprise.
Born when the singer was 18 and working as a furniture polisher in Port Macquarie, NSW, Zoe was kept a secret from TV audiences at Scott and her mother Naomi's request. But the secrecy led to rife speculation the latest Popstars had a love child. To finally end the rumours, Scott agreed to speak exclusively to New Idea about his love for his daughter.
'Naomi and I thought it best not to speak about her because she's so young,' Scott says. 'It wasn't and image thing, it was a privacy thing. I never denied it- I just never talked about her until now. There was no need to.'
Naomi, 21, and Zoe, 2, continue to live in Port Macquarie, while Scott tours Australia to promote I'm Moving On. As he is now based in Sydney, he is thrilled to be seeing his daughter regularly once again.
Admitting he was consumed with panic when Naomi told him she was pregnant, he is now a devoted dad.
'I was shocked when Naomi told me- I didn't think I was ready to be a father, I'd only just turned 18,' Scott explains. 'But I got used to the idea and now I wouldn't send Zoe back for anything. She's my inspiration.'
Naomi adds:'I'd been told I'd have very little chance of falling pregnant because of scarring from endometriosis. It was such a shock- I thought it was a miracle.
'I was scared but I didn't for one minute think about not having her.'
The couple decided to take things week by week, choosing not to rush into a shotgun marriage or attempt to live together straight away.
After Zoe was born, Scott shared his care with Naomi, at one stage becoming a stay-home dad while Naomi returned to work.
'Zoe has made me grow up and made me think about what I do,' He reflects.
'If someone is speeding, I think "Slow Down- I have to live and be there for Zoe!"'
As Zoe falls asleep in her mother's arms, Naomi and Scott say that having a baby did not break up their relationship.
'If anything, she has brought us closer together. We were going in different directions,' Scott says, sutely reffering to Popstars.
'The hardest thing for me is missing Zoe,' Scott says. 'But I know that everything happens for a reason.'
The couple split up only a few months ago when Scott's work commitments took him to Western Australia. While there, he launched his Popstars career at the Perth auditions.
'I'm sad that it hasn't worked out. But we both love Zoe and will always have that bond,' Scott says.
Parenthood hasn't held Scott back- he auditioned for Popstars with Naomi's support. But Naomi is amazed at the mob scenes which accompanied some of Scott's instore appearances.
'I'm like: "Why are they screaming? It's just Scott!"' she says, she says with the grounding of a pre-fame friend.
Scott is now working towards an enduring singing career, with a follow up single and album due out later this year. His record company Warner Music are delighted with his success, paticularly as Scott is the first Popstar to have a number one single after the show has ended.
Scott is hoping to stay in Sydney and see Zoe as much as possible.
'If everything keeps going well, I'll be able to give Zoe everything she could ever want,' He says.
'This career is really a job to provide for her. I know there is this flash in the pan thing with Popstars, but I have faith in myself, and people around me have faith too.'
