TV HITS- King Of Pop- July 2002
You voted him the Kind of Pop, now Popstars winner Scott Cain is ready to dish the dirt on what really happened behind the scenes...
What went through your mind when you found out you'd won?
Well, during the last week everyone had been saying to me, "You're going to win it!" and it was like, "Yeah, I am!" But I had heaps of good calls ready in case I lost, like I was going to call out, "Recount!"
What did you say to [Popstars runner-up] Danielle?
I just have her a big hug and congratulated her for making it so far. She was happy for me. And I know that she'd do well.
So spill it! Are you and Danielle a couple?
We are friends! Seeing the story - that we were a couple - in the paper freaked me out! I couldn't believe it. It made me feel famous.
So, did you have a crush on any of any of the female finalists?
A crush on any of the girls? Well, there's only one Danielle! [laughs]
Will you keep in touch with the other seven finalists?
I hope so. When I saw then on one of the last episodes they were all saying good stuff about me and it reminded me how much I missed them. When we were all together we just rocked. We had a strong vibe. As the weeks passed and they left, I really missed them because I wanted to share the experience.
When you showed up at the first audition, did you ever think you'd make it?
The funny thing is that in my head, I was like, "I'm going o make it." I never doubted myself for a second.
Are you usually so confident about things?
I try to be. If you are confident about things you give it your best, instead of being all, "I'm never going win."
What's it like seeing yourself on television and hearing your song on the radio?
It's funny. I think that I'm almost famous. When I walk down the street people smile a me and when I smile back, it makes their day.
What's it like having loads of fans and hearing people scream out your name?
It's cool! Especially when there are big groups of people. They get all excited and I can't believe it, it's just me. I'm still the same person and all these people love me for no reason except that it's me.
What do your mates think of your pop stardom?
Oh, they love it. But they're exactly the same. I'm still just Scotty. They always believed in me.
Have you always dreamt of becoming a pop star?
I've always wanted to be in this position.
What was your first job?
My very first job was in tele-marketing and I sold security. I'd have to ring people and try to talk them into things. When you're in tele-marketing a lot of people are like, "Go away." So then I'd get their number and ring them at four in the morning! [Laughs]
What other job have you held?
I worked as factory hand in a steel factory. That was tough job - grinding, drilling holes and stuff. My most recent job was as a furniture polisher. This is much better than sweating it out in a factory!
What are you going to buy with your first big pay cheque?
I want to say something really cool, but I'll probably invest it.
What's your natural hair colour?
My natural colour is mouse brown, but I bleach it. If I go out in the sun a lot it goes blond, but right now it's peroxided blond!
Will you ever dye your hair a different colour or get a crazy haircut?
I'll keep my hair like this because it's how people know me. But usually I just go crazy with my hair and do whatever I want with it.
What's the craziest haircut you've ever had?
I once had four Mohawks - two down the middle and two down the side - and they were bleach blond. I've also shaved my head, so I had a strip of hair all around the sides and it was bald on top!
You're a natural in front of the cameras. Would you have gone on Big Brother?
No way! I can hardly handle seeing myself on television, because it can be a little embarrassing. I could never go through what those people go through, where they show everything you say. In Popstars they edit out the bad bits and leave the good bits!
What's the best thing you've been sent from a fan?
My two little cousins made up these big posters with all these little pictures of me, and they stuck glitter all over it and wrote how much they loved me. That was cool!
What's the best thing about fame?
Being able to make people happy.
If you had 30 seconds to convince someone to buy your single what would you say?
That's a tough one. I'd say, "Buy my single or I'll beat you up!" But only if they're smaller than me! [Laughs]
Would you buy your own music?
Yeah, my music's good! It's a new sound. It's a Scott Cain sound!
