[Sarah Noyes - wife of Deacon John Hale of Beverley, Mass ... accused of witchcraft in 17th century - her husband a Deacon defended her & authored the well known Explanation/Apology of the Salem With Trials in Puritan England. She was born in Newbury Massachusetts Bay Colony on the north shore. When the witchcraft trials began, her husband was a Chaplain with the militia recruited for "King WIlliam's War" in Quebec & came home to find her accused. Puritans, in religion & party soughtthe connection to & legiticmacy of Old Sarum & Salisbury for their Calvinism. Her father & both grandfathers (Noyes & Joseph Brown] were Deacons; & she several times had contested openly, Deacon Cotton Mather of Boston's North Church. Her Noyes are traced back to Baron de la Noyes in England at the Conquest. Her son James Hale was Deacon of Ashford, Ct. & his grand-daughter Sarah Hale married Thomas Scott of Ashford & moved to Halifax Vermont after the American Revolution - his son Henry Scott (GGG-GF) moved east again to Maine. In this old west area also, settled the people of the post-Norman conquest "HeathWay" approaching Wales toward Gloucester - the Hathaway family (descended from an old centenarian Nicholas Hathaway at Gloucester, descended -- a Sarah Hathaway(Burt), born in Freetown near RhodeIsland, became Mrs. James Hale of Ashford]

Images made by digital camera & will be scanned later; while not perfect, the images' resolution will allow 'zoom' and are sufficient for reading.
