editor's note: Col Aaron Hobart Esq of ABington, is a 5th greatgrandfather paternal; Hobart to Jones to Scott to Connolly. ... NB that they are not in the txation list in 1754 -- assumedly freed by then; nor in the 1771 taxation list as slaves -- that status is unknown. By the 1790 Massachusetts US census, 'Jack' of the Hobarts was a free-man in listing; and buried later at the Abington Mount Vernon cemetery in the Hobart family graves section. "Billa" is new to me as of today; but in noting him as the slave of Col. Aaron Hobart's father, Isaac Hobart, (Billa lived to 92 years); am now learned as to the Hobart family option of slave-holding/owning.
Further note, that Massachusetts was among the first to illegalize slavery by legal construal; then constitutional ban before the 1789 census; and their home town of Abington became a diverse ABOLITION center in his son's day; and into the Civil War. Its adjoining cemetery i, an old native American burying ground; mixes the tows people including Indians; blacks, mixed etc; many notables as well including the Gould and Merrill families. At least three Hobarts died for the Union in the Army at Henderson North Carolina (the hills? campaign); and one as a POW at the scandalous Andersonville Camp.

Rev Deacon James Hale of Ashford Ct.; began his public preaching in the 'Bristol Country' [so named & later the county .. opened after the King Phillip's War .. in southeastern Massachusetts to eastern Rhode Island adjoining eastern Narragansett Bay ] after graduation from Harvard College Dvinity school; and married Sarah Hathaway in Dighton, Ma. .. Her mother is Hannah Burt. Our Burt ancestry (occasionally listed as Byrd) in this marriage runs to London England [could have been departure point]; other News England Burts (Mass & Conn'cut) came from Halberton, Devonshire. Hatahaway's run back to Gloustershire via Bristol COunty England, near Berkely -- nb other Eas Anglia Berkeley near Huntington to Nottingham area. (Also adjoins there the old English Scooby --the first name for the Boston settlement).
