Ar-Turan Beliefs

Throughout the centuries, the Ar-Turan cultures have pieced together a picture of reality that looks basically like this:

The "material world" is the natural, physical universe containing all planets, stars, and galaxies.  It is the largest and most central dimension, but it is not dominant.  Four other parallel dimensions intersect it at various places and times (time and space are highly relative and fluid in Ar-Turan transdimensional mythology).  The "world of life-force" is (according to the Turonai) the dimension from which the first life-spark originated, beginning the natural evolution of all life, and it is also the dimension to which all life-sparks return after death; the other tribes accept this view to lesser degrees (except for the Bryiarans, who believe Ar-Tyrturon is simply a misunderstood adjunct of the "material world").  The "dark world" is sacred only to the Karbrunai, the dimension from which they draw their arcane powers and summon powerful extra-planar beings (whom they identify as either the Ancients themselves or mysterious created servants of the Ancients); the other tribes view this dimension as a place of evil to be feared and avoided.  The "light world" does not figure into ancient Ar-Turan philosophy; in previous centuries its existence was hypothesized by some Ar-Turan mystics as a logical and necessary counterpart to Ar-Tyrkur, but technological breakthroughs in recent decades have allowed the Karbrunai actually to detect this dimension and its powerful extra-planar beings (whom the humans of Earth call "angels") waging a secret war against the "dark world" and its forces.  The "energy world" does not have any equivalent on Earth; to the Praiarans, it is the sacred dimension from which they drawn their mystical power (and, of course, the dimension to which the Ancients retreated untold ages ago).

Ar-Turan philosophy deduces that the four (or, to the Bryiarans, three) "superior" dimensions overlap parts of the "material world" at special places and times.  The extra-planar beings cannot simply appear anywhere in the "material world" but only where (or when) the barrier between dimensions is thin (either naturally or artificially through ritual preparation).  It is common belief that travel between the "material world" and the superior dimensions is possible, but there is tremendous debate over whether travel between superior dimensions themselves is possible.  One school of thought argues that the "light world" and the "dark world" can each cross into the spirit world but not into each other, and thus the Ar-Kilans ("beings of light") and the Ar-Kurans ("beings of darkness") can only wage their war through the "material world" and the spirit world.  Another school of thought instead imagines that all the dimensions inhabit rounded space, and thus the "light world" and the "dark world" intersect at the other side of reality.  Most Praiarans denounce this latter school of thought as heretical, since it would require that the otherwise completely secluded "energy world" be intersected by the other superior dimensions at the other side of reality.

The Nature of Ar-Turan FX Powers

Diabolism (Kuron):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed, except for Hellfire (which they call "Dark Fire") and Tongue of the Damned (which they call "Dark Speech").  However, the biggest change in Diabolism for the Legacy campaign is the nature of the extra-planar beings themselves.  "Demon" is an Earth concept; the Ar-Turans call such creatures Ar-Kurans, and naturally they take a form closer to Ar-Turan appearance when brought to the "material world" by a Kuron practitioner.  Ar-Kurans still behave like demons and use the same statistics, but they are called by different names:  least demons are known as tikai ("the little ones"), nali are known as nilai ("the fearsome ones"), succubi are known as milai ("the beautiful ones"), and greater demons are known as korai ("the mighty ones").  Over the centuries the Karbrunai have become extremely skillful at handling summoned Ar-Kurans, and Karbrunai society has not been allowed to become totally polluted with Ar-Kuran influence.  Karbrunai society strictly controls sacrifices so that only a restricted number of bloody ritual sites grant a bonus to summoning attempts and only a small number of Ar-Kurans are on the loose at any one time.  Kuron practitioners who break the rules are ruthlessly hunted down by Karbrunai Adepts, and then are usually themselves ritually sacrificed as punishment!

Hemomancy (Vuron):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed, except for Stigmata (which they call "Blood Pain") and Thicker than Water (which they call "Blood Scent").  The skills function as listed.  Philosophically, there is much debate among the Karbrunai about Vuron:  the majority believes it is a subordinate power to Kuron that calls upon the forces of the "dark world" as well, but a sizable minority argues it is a separate phenomenon (although this minority is itself split between those who believe it is a power from the "material world" and those who believe it is actually a power from the "energy world").

Hermeticism (Bryion):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed, except for Daedalus Improved (which they call "Flight Form"), Homumculus (which they call "Form Creation"), and Sleep of Morpheus (which they call "Sleep Spell").  The skills function as listed.  Bryion operates in the same manner as Hermeticism, but with a totally different history:  ritual formulae have been compiled for thousands of years by the Bryiarans, and so they are less obscure and easier to acquire than their counterparts on Earth (although they are just as complex and hard to comprehend).  Bryion practitioners are unified in the belief that their powers are part of the natural universe and that the spirit world, and possibly the other dimensions, are merely adjuncts of "material world".  However, Bryiarans tend to back down on arguments about the "energy world" so as not to anger their Praiaran allies.

Illusion (Darbryion):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed, except for Everyman (which they call "Disguise Form").  The skills function as listed.  Philosophically, the Ar-Turans consider Darbryion simply the opposite side of the same coin as Bryion; however, illusions are simpler to manage and require no complex rituals.  Most practitioners accept the "material world" as the source of their power, but a vocal minority instead argues that their power is different from Bryion with the "energy world" as its source.

Mesmerism (Taron):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed.  The skills function as listed.  Taron practitioners consider their power closely related to Darbryion, with the same philosophical split among them.

Necromancy (Duron):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed, except for Mummy's Curse (which they call "Death Curse") and Steal the Soul (which they call "Steal Life-force").  The skills function as listed.  Ar-Turans call the life battery by a different name, the "life-force jar" (although contemporary models are quite high-tech, ages ago they literally were simple ritualistic vases).  Duron is widely considered the most distasteful power, and only one small clan among the Karbrunai practices it.  The Kuron Adepts who dominate Karbrunai society insist that Duron is closely related and draws its power from the "dark world" as well, although most Duron practitioners suspect the spirit world is the real source.  Duron powers are as fiercely restricted as Kuron, so reanimated corpses are not allowed to overrun Karbrunai lands.

Pyromancy:  This power is not known to exist among the Ar-Turans, who do not even hypothesize its existence--but would call it Fyrion ("flame power") if they did.  It might be practiced by other beings in the galaxy.

Alienism (Praion):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed.  The skills function as listed.  The Praiarans are quite insistant that the "energy world" is the source of their power, and specifically the Ancients who dwell therein.  Indeed, the most learned Praiarans argue that the Bend Space skill actually creates a shortcut across the "material world" via the "energy world".  Just as the Karbrunai have become very skilled at managing the forces from the "dark world" and preventing their society from becoming totally corrupted and polluted by extra-planar beings, the Praiarans have become extremely deft at manipulating the power of the "energy world" without disturbing the Alienist entities who provide it.  Indeed, the lack of direct contact with these entities is troublesome to many Praion mystics, who consider it a test of faith until the time when the Ancients return to the "material world".  Praion practitioners are normally quite hesitant about using the Gibbering Larvae skill, since no one is entirely sure about the relation of the larvae to the "energy world" entities (theories range from their being the children of the Ancients to invisible servants of the Ancients left behind in the "material world").  If Praion practitioners are playing into some greater scheme of the Alienist entities, they are unaware of it.  The Praiarans have occasionally throughout the centuries encountered strange creatures known as the Methrahn, capable of utilizing powers startlingly similar to Praion.  Methrahn flushed out into the open have been hunted down and killed as heretical foes, and attracting or colluding with a Methrahn is one of the worst crimes a Praiaran can commit (usually punished by execution).

Monotheism (Kilon):  This power is not known to exist among the Ar-Turans, although they hypothesize its existence.  However, beings from the "light world" certainly have access to these skills, as might other beings in the galaxy.

Shamanism (Turon):  The Ar-Turans know the specialty skills by basically the same names as listed.  The skills function as listed.  The only major difference in Shamanism for the Legacy campaign is the nature of animals.  Earth animals do not exist on Ar-Turo.  However, as the planet is fairly Earth-like, it is reasonable to assume that Ar-Turo has a similar but slightly different version of most Earth species:  canine-like pack hunters, cat-like forest predators, bird-like flying animals, insects of most types, small rodent-like creatures, and mammal-like herd animals (although, it is important to remember that Ar-Turo is mostly water and favors aquatic or coastal animals).  The "world of life-force" functions exactly as the Spirit World (explained on page 48 of Beyond Science).  Turon practitioners tend to shy away from technology in order to protect ancient traditions.  They will make use of technology above PL 3 if they have to, but they are among the last Ar-Turans still to use old-fashioned metal tools and weapons regularly.  Philosophically, the Turonai are in some ways the most tolerant culture:  they grant the existence of all other dimensions and the validity of most beliefs of the other tribes (although they do not accept the total materialism of the Bryiarans or the Ancients' omnipotence claimed by the Praiarans).

Other Faith FX Powers are particular to Earth or the STAR*DRIVE campaign and do not exist in the Legacy campaign.
