Day 18,

August 9, 2003.

 Just another day…

The night went well as it mostly goes on a bike tour. J

Early in the morning, I was woken up by the sound of people running around the track. I thought that it shouldn’t really matter what they think about a guy getting out of the tent in the park, so I just casually got out and started packing up.

Immediately, a man stopped by and started a usual conversation by asking me questions about the trip and then telling me how he toured himself in his days. How surprising it may sound, many people actually done something similar, and of course that's often who starts the conversation in the first place.

Few hours I spent eating breakfast before the library opened and then rode to the bike shop at 11, as we agreed with the owner yesterday. I took the wheel off outside and it took him maybe 3-4 minutes to put the spoke in and true the rim. Actually, by tightening the broken spoke, shape of the rim got back to normal.

I thanked the guy and he took a picture of me with the bike to post it on the store’s photo board. I also bought a spoke wrench, finally, so that I could do the repair myself now if more problems occur.

I returned to the library and spent another hour browsing the web. J There are so many travelogues on the net, and most of them have some kind of philosophical conclusion summarizing all the experiences into some kind of logical, finished accomplishment. Well, I still don’t have anything like this on my mind and am glad that there should be plenty more days ahead to think about it. After all, I needed to get to NY to catch a flight to Moscow and possibly Amsterdam. The airline tickets have the lowest prices around October-November, so if I show up in JFK in the Summer, I will get ripped off by the high ticket prices. J I thought it was cool reason to ride, actually doing few things at a time – saving money on the ticket, and enjoying the actual trip. J

After the library I found a laundry room and washed clothes for the next hour and a half. Waiting in the laundry, I charged the camera and met a local girl named Lupe. This was her first day at the job in Laundromat. We talked a bit and I was surprised how she didn’t have any plans for her future. L

After the laundry, I stopped at Wal-Mart and bought some cookies and candy bars.

When I finally took off from Winnemucca, it was already nearly 8 pm. Basically today I just rested after Jungo road and didn’t regret a thing.

After 10 miles of strong riding with the tail wind, I took off the road into some kind of little residential neighborhood in the middle of the desert.

There I found a really cool place to set up the tent – under the road way, where I am perfectly hidden from curious views and rain.

The next morning I discovered the flat rear tire. Refer to picture taken during the repair process.

Today – 10 miles. Total – 681.
