gdog97: How did you come up with the name captb71? captb71: I was drinking with my roommates in college one night and we all got nicknames. I had to add the 71 because believe it or not, there are apparently multiple captbs in the country. gdog97: How old are you and where are you from? captb71: Grew up in Phoenix, went to college in Tucson, then moved to St. Louis and Syracuse. Now back in Tucson. gdog97: Married? Single? Kids? Pets? captb71: Im married with three children. Two boys, one girl. gdog97: What do you do for a living? captb71: I am a hand surgeon. gdog97: Do you have any other IDs? captb71: I play using the ID snwbrdskr. Overall, I would probably agree that coaches should be limited to one ID per world, but I just cannot bring myself to drop the two teams I run with that ID. Ill probably get fired soon enough, though, and then maybe Ill be down to only one ID. gdog97: What your interests and or hobbies outside of GD? captb71: I like to exercise, but Im also pretty fat, according to my son. I love the NFL and the NCAA basketball tournament, but dont really watch sports otherwise. I consider myself to be a skier, but Ive probably only been 2 or 3 times in the last 5 years, so thats not very accurate. gdog97: Do you play any video games? If so, what are your favorites? captb71: No way. I freakin love them, but I end up playing them until 4 in the morning when I have to be up at 5:30. So, I just dont even consider buying them anymore. I went through a phase when I would play Railroad Tycoon all night. Id get up from my computer at 4 AM, my eyes would be burning, my ass and legs would hurt, my balls would be all sweaty, and I couldnt sleep because Id be thinking about how to design my railroad to keep my trains from bottlenecking in Kansas City as they crossed the country. I was like, This sucks. I understand why people love them, but I cant have them around. gdog97: Whats your favorite meal? captb71: I probably gotta go with good pizza and some wings. gdog97: Favorite restaurant? captb71: With three kids, pretty much any place that has a wait less than 10 minutes with a good beer selection and decent service is my favorite restaurant. gdog97: What album is in your CD player/Ipod right now? captb71: The two I am listening to the most are Ozzys Live and Loud record and Kenny Chesneys Live Those Songs Again. Ive got way too much live music on my IPod. gdog97: Favorite sports figures growing up? captb71: Joe Montana, Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman. Im not a basketball fan, but Larry Bird and Michael Jordan really have my respect and admiration. gdog97: Favorite sports teams? captb71: Ive been a Dallas Cowboys fan my whole life. I lived in St. Louis for 9 years, so I also really like the baseball Cardinals. I sort of follow the Dodgers, Lakers, and Rams. gdog97: Turn on's and Turn off's? captb71: Turn ons slutty clothing and a nice rack captb71: Turn offs ugly hands and unkempt feet in flip-flops gdog97: Republican or Democrat? captb71: Hugely republican, but nowhere near the far right. gdog97: What kind of vehicle do you drive? captb71: A shitty red Cavalier. My wife has a new Sequoia, but Im stuck driving a shitty, beat-up Chevy. My medical assistant has a better car than I do. I was parking in a parking lot for physicians at a hospital here and a security guard told me I couldnt park there because it was for doctors only. gdog97: Favorite penthouse forum letter? captb71: The one where the chick is screwing her husband and cant stop moaning, CaptB! CaptB! CaptB! That was a good one. gdog97: What TV or movie character is your personality most closely related? captb71: Lloyd Christmas. gdog97: Favorite movies or TV shows? captb71: I love pretty much all movies. A movie really has to suck for me to give it a bad review. Here are some of the movies I cannot turn off if I see that they are on: Shawshank Redemption, Payback, Jerry Maguire. Of course, you put any Star Wars episode on, Im watching it. My favorite TV shows are PTI and The Deadliest Catch. gdog97: Where did you go to college? captb71: The University of Arizona. Bear Down, Arizona! gdog97: Did you play any sports? captb71: I played football in high school and had some feelers to play at division III in California, but I was nowhere near dedicated or focused enough to make that happen. gdog97: Ideal vacation spot? captb71: Id say somewhere in New England or maybe a great ski trip. But my wife prefers sunny vacations to places like the Caribbean, so thats pretty much where we end up going. GD QUESTIONS gdog97: How did you find out about WIS? captb71: I think I read the Bill Simmons article in ESPN Magazine. I played a few seasons of sim football, baseball, and basketball. Overall, I was disappointed with WIS until I discovered GD. gdog97: Do you play other WIS games? captb71: Not anymore. HBD is awesome and I loved my two seasons, but I am not smart enough to juggle all the aspects of managing a team. gdog97: How did you learn how to 'play' GD? With 1600 career wins, 44 CC's and 6 NC's, what was your learning curve? captb71: I remember when I was just beginning to coach at South Sewanee in Wilkinson and they were the dominant DIII school. I lost my first or second game there and thought, Crap, I am going to coach this team into the toilet. This could be bad. I had to really work to do all of that talent justice. Then again, the SCAC was full of softies, so that helped. (editors note, gdog97 was in that conference) gdog97: What coach's have helped you the most? captb71: Truthfully, I cant say that I have learned much from anyone. Anytime I try to emulate a coach, my results are bad. I have only asked a coach about a specific game plan one time. The game plan he sent me was so jacked up that it was unreadable. If you are out there, you know who you are, you bastard. The one piece of information I learned from a coach that has turned out to be extremely valuable was the importance of strength for a running back. I was looking through cravedoggs roster and noticed that all of his running backs were strong like bull. Since then, I have looked for strength in the top 2 attributes. gdog97: How many GD teams do you have? captb71: I used to have twelve. Then I thought I was going to have to drop all of them because of work and started dropping teams until I got down to five. But I found myself surfing around GD almost every night and adding a few teams. Now I have seven and its taking serious willpower to keep from adding another one or two. gdog97: Favorte World? captb71: Rockne. I started there in season three with two teams and its the world I follow the most closely. gdog97: Who would consider a 'GD Friend' or possibly a 'RL Friend'? captb71: Im probably not holding up my end of the deal, but Id consider you, jeffkahleb, Alvarado, and cebrake to be my closest friends that I have met playing GD. gdog97: What is the first bit of advice you'd give a newbie who's emailed you for a tip? captb71: Fill your schollies. Try to learn quite a bit before you just make a lateral move to a good team. gdog97: Do have a 'cookie cutter' approach to your teams, or would you say you run each one differently? captb71: Theyre all the same. I should experiment more to make myself better, but dont have the balls to try. gdog97: Recruiting is a 'hot button' topic, how do you feel about the following - A.) 'sharing' of lists captb71: I used to do it a lot. Now I hardly do it at all because I think its more interesting that way. If others want to do it, I dont have a problem with it. B.) carry over captb71: If you earned it one way or another, you should keep it. gdog97: What kind of teams are the hardest to game plan against? Why? captb71: Teams that run and pass well out of trips are a bitch to game plan for. I also dont like gameplanning against a good pro-set team. Oddly enough, I dont do the very things I think are tough to plan for. Im not sure what that says about me. gdog97: I'm not looking for you to give a bunch of guys a handjob on this one, so you can only name one coach. Who's the best, in your opinion? captb71: Dude, I was so looking forward to handing out a bunch of handjobs. Kind of disappointing. If I can only name one, Im going with jeffkahlebcarpediemddingosportssfan. He is good. gdog97: A lot of speculation about the pending 'uber' update from WIS. What needs to be in it? What 'improvements' do you think need to me made asap? captb71: There needs to be more parity at lower levels. There should be less of a talent gap between teams at DIII, DII, and IAA. These coaches who spend 10 seasons at a DIII powerhouse should have to work harder to maintain their dominance if they refuse to leave or move up. Im not saying that the 300th best team should have equal recruit vision to the best team, but the 40th or 50th best team should have nearly identical vision to the best team. What makes IA so competitive is that the talent level between teams is so close. IA needs playoffs. I love IA, but I hate playing in meaningless bowls at the end of every season, even if its a BCS bowl. Its so cool to look at different playoff brackets and potential matchups, but at IA there are only 2 bowls I even look at, the NC and my own. gdog97: Any long term GD goals? captb71: It would be sweet to win a national championship again. Its been so long that I cant really remember what that is like. Overtime Questions - first thing that comes to mind: gdog97: Real or Fake? captb71: under 25 years old, real. Over 25 years old, fake. gdog97: David Letterman - really cool or gap tooth fool? captb71: Total stud gdog97: Who will be our president in 2008? captb71: Even though I live in Arizona, I think and hope it will be Rudy Guiliani gdog97: 2007 World Series Champion? captb71: I hope its the Cardinals again. gdog97: jeffkahleb captb71: She was a very awkward girl who has really grown up to be a beautiful and charming young woman. gdog97: Blonde, Brunette or Red head? captb71: Blonde gdog97: Global Warming captb71: Probably cyclical and not nearly as big a problem as it is made out to be. gdog97: Legalize it? captb71: No. We dont need to make it easier for people to waste their lives. gdog97: Best SI Swimsuit model ever? captb71: Marisa Miller by far. Crap, now I gotta use the bathroom. gdog97: Mac or PC? captb71: I tried to recruit using a Mac once and it sucked. PC. gdog97: Parting Shot?? captb71: Thanks to everyone who has made this game so much fun to play. |
