I know that in the US most of you want to have "thunder" drag times... But since you've got a English car, try making a rally car rather than a drag. I have more fun in a good twisty tamac road then smoking tires through a stop light... Anyway... Get yourself a good 1275cc A+ engine. Those that come with MG Metro, Austin Metro Allegro Montego and so on.... I could go on and on about tuning that engine, but i'll stik to the basic 1st stage to be done. Unless you want to race, start with a good intake mainfold (the metro 1.3 is already a good one...) with the HIF44 Su carb, correct needle and a good K and N filte with ram pipes. A stainless steel LCB (long centre Branch) type exhaust mainfold, with a 2 inch link and end pipe (RC40 type backbox). Add a Oil coole and conside a change to an electical radiato rather than that mechanicl stock one (some experts say 5hp gain) Late cooper +90 ones are ideal for this. A good coil Lucas sports is fine. With these changes and considering you got a MG Metro engine (72hp at wheels) expect around 80hp. As you can see by just making it "breathe" better you'll get good gains.  By the way i own a 1971 clubman!
The other day i was looking at a 1970 panel van the same as in my gallery and saw a great idea. Do you have a van with dinted side panels or have to be really careful not to dent them. Well George the guys i looked at he has put aluminuim panels up either side of the back of the van, not only looks impressive but keeps the sides of the van in top shape! What a great idea i give full credit to George Halley!
