Scootculture - Book Reviews

1) Blue Haynes Manual (covering all rotary valve models from 1959 to 1978). The first 'Haynes' manual available for Vespa scooters. This manual tries to cover both small and large frame models (rotary valve '59-'78). Considering the wide spectrum entailed, this manual manages to cover almost everything. Step-by-step guides to maintenance and routine servicing are included, as well as the more advanced tasks. Exploded view diagrams are priceless and all procedures are accompanied with pictures and easy to follow text. Also contains helpful hints, specifications, tolerance measurements, torque wrench settings, wiring diagrams and a helpful 'fault finding' section - this is a must for anyone carrying out work on Vespa scooters, from the Sunday summer riding hobbyist to the professional.

2) Red (& Brown) Haynes Manuals (covering PX, PE, PX/E, T5 and T5 Classic models). More of the same from Haynes only this time the entire PX range gets the treatment, once again this manual is a must for Vespa owners & mechanics. Note that early editions of this book are in Brown and the brown editions do not cover the T5 or T5 classic.

3) Purple Haynes Manual (covering all Piaggio Automatic models from 1991 to 1998). Again, more of the same from Haynes only this time its for owners & mechanics of Piaggio's Automatic range, if you fall into these categories this manual's worth every penny, if you don't - save your dosh!

4) How to restore and maintain your Vespa Motorscooter written by Bob Darnell and Bob Golfen. This book is well written and well laid out by two people who have actually spent a great deal of time actually doing what they have written about. Bob Darnell is widely regarded as one of USA's top Vespa restoration experts. The duo have enlisted the help of Piaggio for a host of technical data which includes the most comprehensive list of Vespa chassis numbers I have ever seen! All models are touched upon and in particular the older (50's/60's) models are well covered. Sections dedicated throughout to frame types, vespa hstory and development, maintenance, restoration, engine, carburetor, fuel & lubrication, front end, headsets, wheels, electrics, paint/bodywork, performance parts, trim and accessories! Overall this book is highly recommended to anybody who owns any Vespa scooter!
