On their honeymoon up the dark Mississippi River, Lieren and Ashton are set upon by river pirates. In the ensuing battle, Ashton is shot and she is thrown overboard into the murky waters where she thinks her husband has been killed......

3 years later while going home, Ashton's carriage is in the way of a fast approaching horse and rider. when the accident is cleared, Ashton discovers that the girl he has scooped from the muddy river bank is the image of his long thought dead wife ! But how can it be? She was seen going down in the deep depths of the river and her body was never recovered. Taking her to his home, they discover that she has no memory of who she is.
