What would the series be like if the different characters hooked it up? This part of the site is dedicated to analyzing what would happen if each of the different characters fell in love with each other. And just maybe it might answer the question - "What did Fred and Daphne do all those times they went off alone?"

FRED AND DAPHNE

Fred and Daphne seem to be the couple most people automatically pair up when romance is suggested for the Scooby-Doo gang. But are they really the best? They are compatible, and it's a safe bet both were popular at school, so they would have a shared background there. In some episodes, Fred and Daphne do casual dances together. In "What a Night for a Knight", Daphne jumps into Fred's arms, Scooby-and-Shaggy style. In early episodes, Fred sometimes paired himself off with Daphne, though in later shows, he took Velma along as well. Visualizing Fred and Daphne as married, I can see them as a successful and compatible couple, but rather conformist and unexciting. I don't think Fred and Daphne should automatically be together just because they're the two most attractive people in the gang. But the way things are going in the recent direct-to-video releases, I may be disappointed. They were jealous one for the other in Zombie Island, and in Witch's Ghost, it looked like Fred was about to tell Daphne something important--the something important.

KEY EPISODES/MOVIES: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? in general; Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island; Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost.

SHAGGY AND VELMA

During a few episodes of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?, it seemed like Velma and Shaggy were attempting to start something, probably being jealous of Daphne and Fred, but things apparently fizzled out. In "A Night of Fright Is No Delight", Velma valiantly tries to rescue Shaggy and Scooby, then tries to mold Shaggy into her image of a good man. ("You're gonna be brave no matter how chicken you are.") In "What a Knight for a Knight", Velma carries around Shaggy's medicine, and he her spare pair of glasses in "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts". In "Haunted House Hang Up", they hold hands, albeit out of necessity. In "A Tiki Scare is No Fair", they play Tarzan and Jane, then Shaggy watches Velma do the hula. One imagines Shaggy and Velma gave up on romance due to their conflicting personalities. She wants mystery and intrigue; he just wants to run away and hide - and eat.

KEY EPISODES: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?: "What a Knight for a Knight"; "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts"; "A Night of Fright Is No Delight"; "Haunted House Hang Up" and "A Tiki Scare Is No Fair".

SHAGGY AND DAPHNE

The gang broke up, and it was just Shaggy, Scrappy, and Scooby for some time. Then--Daphne came back. That left her and Shaggy, with only two dogs for chaperones, travelling around the world. You gotta admit, it was a cozy situation. In "No Thanks, Masked Manx", Daphne seems to be taking Shaggy home to meet the folks, who are quite fond of him. Mrs. Blake, in fact, calls Shaggy "a knight in shining armor". Daphne and Shaggy dance together at the masquerade ball. In The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo's premiere episode, "To All The Ghouls I've Loved Before", Daphne and Shaggy share a lingering hug after a crisis is over. I've never seen anything quite like this transpire between two human members of the gang, and it changed my view of Scooby-Doo forever. Besides that, I think Shaggy and Daphne have an appeal similar to that of Lady and the Tramp, Aladdin and Jasmine, and Jack and Rose, that is to say, a ragamuffin-like boy winning a high class girl. There are even a couple of Daphne/Shaggy incidents in the early Fred&Daphne days of "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You". In "What a Knight for a Night", Daphne praises Shaggy as "the swiningest gymnast in school!" In "Never Ape an Ape Man", she whips up a special "Shaggy snack" just for him.

KEY EPISODES: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You: "What a Knight for a Night" and "Never Ape an Ape Man", The New Scooby and Scrappy-Doo Show (a.k.a. Scooby's Mystery Funhouse): "No Thanks, Masked Manx"; The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo: "To All the Ghouls I've Loved Before".

VELMA AND FRED

I would like to see two pairs of romantic couples in the gang, not Fred/Daphne, Velma/guest star, and Shaggy/nobody, as it is in the "Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island" and "Scooby-Doo and the Witch's Ghost". So, besides promoting Shaggy/Daphne, I would also like to put in a word for Velma/Fred. Why can't the brainy girl get the jock? Fred and Velma have even more in common than Fred and Daphne. Brainy Fred and Velma are always the two to take the lead in solving a mystery. "You know how Freddie and Velma are when they got a mystery to unsolve," Shaggy observes in "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Werewolf", noticeably omitting Daphne. Everyone seems to think it's such a big deal that Fred used to pair himself off with Daphne. Well, how about all those later episodes in which he made sure to bring Velma along as well? When Daphne is unavailable, Fred often pairs himself off with just Velma, for short periods of time in "Which Witch is Which" and "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts", and for most of the Scrappy-era episode "I Left My Neck in San Francisco".

KEY EPISODES: Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?: "A Gaggle of Galloping Ghosts" and "Which Witch is Which", Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo: "I Left My Neck in San Francisco".

Cartoon Network marathon bumpers, show bumpers, and commercials (such as "interview" clips with the gang, "The Scooby-Doo Project", or Moltar's Super Bowl conversation with Fred) are not considered "official", at least by the author. They are parodies! So any romantic incident within them will not be considered as evidence. The Johnny Bravo crossover is also best viewed as a parody, rather than an official story.
