International Training Workshop For Medical Students

December 9th-12th, 2004

Alexandria, Egypt

Times are changing. The medical profession has come under intense scrutiny and serious shortcomings in medical education have been identified. Though medical education aims to produce doctors who will promote people's health, this aim has not been achieved in many places, despite the enormous progress made during the last century in the biomedical sciences. The individual patient now expects a doctor to be trained as an attentive listener, a careful observer, a sensitive communicator, and an effective clinician.

It is no longer enough to solely treat the illness. According to the above aspirations, our vision of this training is to enable the participating medical students to improve their skills and qualifications. This we will try to achieve by offering them training in intellectual, communication and professional skills, helping them improve their medical research orientation.  At the same time, we want to encourage them to assume a more active role in global health improvement by recognizing the requirements, basic knowledge, and skills necessary to tackle the increasing magnitude of world health problems. We will show them different medical educational systems and recent developments in learning in medical education, such as the e-learning systems.

With this training we would like to ensure each medical student who participates will make an informed contribution to their educational development, and at the same time gain the necessary skills to become efficient in time management, competent and compassionate, to acquire lifelong learning abilities and be able to interpret scientific data.
