I picked up a copy from our local library and just finished reading it! It's a great book and a useful addition to the list of few other books on Murree that have been written in recent years. Anybody who has gone through Virgil Miedema's A Glimpse through the Forest knows the pure feeling of contentment one gets after reading a 'standard reference work'. Shaukat, with her new book attempts to emulate Miedema's effort and covers hitherto unchartered territory and succeeds in creating another useful document on Murree.

Unfortunately the book is not free of drawbacks and has some glaring omissions and inaccuracies. Moreover, her excessive verbal ornamentation and afeminate poetic style becomes rather 'narky' at times. But I suppose you cannot blame somebody for being too passionate about a place which is so close to their heart.

All in all it is a good effort by a Pakistani female author and full marks to her for undertaking this labour of love and leaving no wide gaps in between her research work, which is generally up to the mark.

If you wish to discuss the book in more detail please mail me for feedback. -- Ali Jan/ Murree Hills (June 2006)
