Thresholds for each frequency may be plotted with a variety of symbols. These are just a few that may appear.

Each clinic may use its own particular symbols. Luckily, a legend containing symbols and their meanings is typically printed on audiograms. In addition, an area for the audiologist's notes and interpretations are also included.

The most commonly used symbols are the X and O. They represent hearing in the left and right ears, respectively, for tones that were presented through headphones without any competing sounds (like white noise) being fed into one ear while the other ear is being tested.

Information on other new terms introduced on this graphic may be found in the glossary.
