Terrel Lewis was the club's first school sponsor, with Don King serving as the Kiwanis sponsor. Terrel transferred to Utah in 2000 and Dolores Maese became the new school sponsor. Terrel and Dolores are both Kiwanis Club members. Terrel was also a Key Club member in high school.

The Builders Club is very active in school and community projects. Projects at the school include the aluminum can recycling program and operating a concession stand at sporting events. As a result of the recycling program, the club was able to purchase recycling containers that are now located throughout the school area.

The La Plata Club was in the leadership role in the penny collection for the Silver City Penny Park. They spent many hours working in the actual construction in phases I and II of the park.

Each year the club joins with the Silver City Kiwanis Club in their two fund-raising projects. In July they wait tables for the annual Cowboy Breakfast/Bar-B-Que in Gough Park. During the Christmas holidays they can be seen working along side Kiwanians in the annual bell-ring fundraiser.

Some of the community projects the club has participated in, besides the Penney Park project, have included the community-wide cleanup, the governor's Keep New Mexico Clean project, which included serving breakfast to the governor and his party when they visited Silver City. Last fall they participated in the March for Diabetes program. In December they collected food for the Salvation Army food basket program. Currently, they are involved in raising funds for the Leukemia Foundation.

New club members are awarded a club tee shirt for completing their first ten hours of community service. Each spring club members are selected to attend the Builders Club Retreat at Kamp Kiwanis. Those attending include the incoming club officers for the next school year and others who have accumulated sixty or more hours of community service during the school year. This will mark the fifth year that students, from the 38-member club, have attended Kemp Kiwanis.

Throughout the school year, Builders Club members participate in activities with the Silver City Kiwanis Club. Each month selected members of the Builders Club are guests at the Kiwanis Club luncheon meetings and each spring incoming club officers are installed at the annual Student Awards Banquet
