after purchasing this on convenient cd format, i loaded it into the car cd player to have a listen. the car speakers have since ceased to function, and my delicate aural phisiology is now irreperably damaged.
yes, i could have turned it down, but lightning bolt is one of those bands (bands?) that is only done justice when volumes are excessive.
lightning bolt consists of two brians, a drum kit, and a bass. the brians take cues from similar noise purveyors (ruins, orthrelm, hella), combining the wonderfully twisted party of providence's "freak-rock" scene with jazz technicality. what caught me off guard, though, is that this shit is METAL. i am still not sure how it's possible, but there is some insane riffage on almost every song on the first side (i.e. first five tracks). there is much more to this than riffage, though. even for noise junkies, there is plenty of fun in store - the last 5 tracks (a.k.a. side two) are full of experimentation before the stentorian finale (hahaha, stentorian!). to write off this album without hearing it may be the closest thing to a crime against music this side of aerosmith.
stop kidding yourself and visit the lunatics at load records to make the rainbow your own.
