well this was, more or less, an indie rock show. usually i avoid such fare, but i got in for free and was curious about some of the jazzy/mathy tendencies of the bands. outside alcatraz started things off with some jazziness (piano, bass, drums), but dealt mostly in mathy, low-key indie rock (polvo meets death cab for cutie?). would have been better as a more improvised, all instrumental outfit. 31 knots were next and were probably the best band of the night. their unusual take on mathy emo involved some finger-tapped guitar complexities and bouncy post-punk basslines to go along with upbeat drumming. touches of jazz sensibilities completed the package. sushirobo was third up and, apparently, was a big draw for a lot of the fans. their slowed-down les savy fav style was catchy, but their performance and tempos lacked the energy that would have made them exciting. still, it is worth giving credit to any band that unironically acknowledges their parents in the crowd, as well as their lab assistant. aveo closed the night with what sounded like 90s "alternarock." phooey.
