Bernoulli's Principle Investigation #3 Student Response
Sheet
What Happens to the
Key Science Topic
w
Ensure that each member of the group is able to define pressure, knows what
direction air flows in relation to pressure and can explain Bernoulli's
Principle.
Problem
w
Investigate how
air moving between two suspended ping pong balls affects the ball movement and
supports Bernoulli's Principle.
Materials
Needed (per student or per group)
w
2 Ping-Pong balls
w
Scissors
w
2
Lengths of fishing line (24”)
w
Masking tape
w Stand
Investigation
w
Tape
two equal length pieces of fishing line to two ping-pong balls.
w
Hang
the two ping-pong balls about 5 cm apart from a horizontal support.
w
Discuss
and write a group response to the first two bullets under Results/Responses.
w
Blow
air directly at one of the ping-pong balls. Observe what happens to the ping
pong balls.
w
Blow
air between the ping-pong balls in a quick blast. Observe what happens to the ping pong balls.
Results/Responses
w
Predict what
you think will happen when air is blown directly at one of the ping pong balls.

Was
the first prediction made by your group accurate? If not, explain what did happen when the air
was blown directly at the ball. _______________________________________________________________

Was
the second prediction made by your group accurate? If not, explain what happened when the air
was blown between the two ping pong balls. _______________________________________________________________

Reflections/Applications
w
Why did the ping pong balls move apart when air was blown between them?
Be sure to include information about pressure, flowing air movement and
Bernoulli's Principle in your group answer.
Ensure that all members of the group understand the group answer.

area systems that affect our weather.
