Basic Components

CPU: The CPU is the brain of the computer. Without it the computer would not function because there is nothing for the programs to be directed by. Think of this component as an office manager it keeps things running smoothly. And the higher the GHz and the more cores it has allow it to process more. Recommended no less than a 2.0GHz dual core processor for home office. For gaming a 2.8GHz or faster dual or quad core is recommended so you can run your games at a faster rate.

Hard drive: The hard drive is the place where the data is stored. The bigger the better usually because all of the programs, music, video, games, and documents are stored here. Much like a giant filing cabinet with many papers stored in it. The bigger they are the more information it will store. I Recommend no less than a 500GB (gigabyte)* hard drive if using a home or home office computer for photos, games, video, and/or business programs and documents. For video editing, extreme gaming and multimedia computers a hard drive higher than 750GB is recommended. A gigabyte is approximately 350 songs.

RAM: This is required to store some of the data while it is waiting to be processed. The more the better especially for gaming because more data can be stored to be Processed. Think of this as the person who brings you papers. The more of this you have the faster your computer will seem to go because the data will be ready before the CPU needs it. For home and home office computers I recomend no less than 2GB of DDR2 RAM** to run more programs and be more productive (or play around more). For a gaming or video editing computer I recommend no less than 8 GBs of DDR2 RAM**.

CD/DVD Drive: This is required to read from disks, which most programs and games for computers are written on. This allows a computer to install software. I recommend at least a dual layer DVD burner with a 16x read speed or for reading High Definition disks I recomend a blue-ray reader/burner if it is in your price range.

Floppy Drive: Not recommended because better alternatives are available such as flash drives.

You are now on to Advanced Components.

*Gigabyte (GB) refers to 1,000,000,000 bytes; actual hard drive capacity vary by manufacturers.

**Disusssed in Advanced Components in the motherboard section.
