Harlowe leaves to get the truck while Rosalita stay with the man who tells her that a ghost attacked him and his companions. A green mist appears from behind the corner, and Rosalita drags the man out of the mine to safety. Harlowe returns with the truck and they take the man to Jodi's store. Meanwhile, Burt searches for and finds the secret government lab  underneath Perfection using Jodi's seismograph. Harlowe calls Jodi, over the radio, and asks her to call an ambulance for the injured man. Rosalita tells her story. However, Burt does not believe that a ghost attacked them in the mine, and an argument ensues. Burt and Tyler investigate the mine, and they find two more people who are dead. Twitchell arrives and gives the group the coroner's report, on the man Rosalita and Harlowe rescued from the mine, which states that the man died of dehydration. Burt and tyler return to the mine with Twitchell. They discover that the secret lab is in the mine. They also encounter the green mist. Burt distracts the mist by throwing some water, from a bottle,  against a wall. Two E.P.A. agents arrive in Perfection to investigate the deaths under the cover story that methane gas caused the deaths. Burt and Tyler follow Fallon (Michael Harney) and Wilhelm (Jamie McShane) to see what they can learn. Fallon and Wilhelm attempt to destroy the mist. Using binoculars, Burt realizes that the mist is actually a bacteria. Wilhelm is killed by the mist. Burt and Tyler confront Fallon, and he tells them that the mist is a product genetic engineering originally designed to preserve food. Burt and Tyler suspect that the mist was altered by a compound called Mixmaster which was designed to combine the DNA of different species. They consult with Cletus Poffenberger (Christopher Lloyd), and he confirms their worst fears. The E.P.A. decide to drop napalm on Perfection Valley Nevada in order to kill the mist. In a race against time, the people of Perfection use a vacuum cleaner to safely trap the mist without causing harm to people.
