Science Is Not A Spectator Sport
Summer Enrichment Program

A summer science experience for your child like no other.

When will the summer session(s) take place?

August 4--8, 2008

What is our mission?
The goal of Science Is Not A Spectator Sport is simple.  We believe that all children learn science when presented by caring instructors in a hands-on, inquiry-based manner.  Science should be an experience to be enjoyed, not a chapter to be dissected.

What can you expect for your child?

Expect your child to be immersed in hands-on science from head to toes.  Expect your child to be excited about each and every day she/he spends with us.  Expect your child to leave us with learning that will last a lifetime.

Who are we?
Science Is Not A Spectator Sport is operated by John Farmer, a Forest Hills School District teacher and recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science (National Science Foundation).

Okay, you've got my interest. Specifics?
Science Is Not A Spectator Sport will offer ONE session this summer for children ranging in age from 8-12. The program will be Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  Bring a packed lunch, a snack, and dress for the weather each day.  Throughout the week your child will experience life, earth, and physical science activities that stress the Ohio Science Standards. Activities include the following:

Life Science - Through hands-on activities your child will explore the flora and fauna of forest and pond ecosystems, create a pond microcosm and explore it using a microscope, use dichotomous keying to identify plants, and learn how to vermicompost food waste.

Earth Science - Through hands-on activities your child will explore the effect of gravity on falling objects, create and eat models of the earth (layers, plate tectonics), hunt for fossils, and create a water cycle column.

Physical Science - Through hands-on activities your child will explore energy by powering the Energy CycleTM , construct electrical circuits, explore mechanical advantage using simple machines, and launch water rockets.
