Poor Qui-gon. Without him we're lost. Who else can train the one who's supposed to bring balance to the Force? The no-fun, life-restricting Jedi of the ivory tower? I don't think so.\     In Ep II Obi-wan's got quite a chip on his shoulder. Although he's "like a father" to Anakin, it is appearant he still harbors some bitterness for having Anakin's apprenticeship foisted on him. He didn't like Anakin to begin with, and disagreed with Qui-gon's absconding with the little rascal. But he could not defy his beloved master's dying request. Obi may or may not be a real stickler for the Jedi code in every circumstance, but Yoda's tutelage from an early age left a greater sense of strictness in him than Qui-gon could reform, even with his emphasis on the 'Living Force.'\
The Council's interest in the Naboo situation is purely self-motivated: to discover whether the Sith have returned. If not for Darth Maul showing himself on Tatooine, the Council might not have given a damn about what Amidala chose to do. \     If this is typical of the way the Jedi deal with injustice in the galaxy, then it's no wonder a deeply compassionate Jedi Master like Qui-Gon Jinn is seen as an unruly maverick. And no wonder the Jedi were ready to take a great fall. (2)
"...a deeply compassionate Jedi..." "Compassion, which I would define as unconditional love, is essential to a Jedi." I think Qui-gon would be very pleased with Anakin's development at Ep II. And even with some of the influence Palpatine is having on him—to trust his feelings. I think Qui-gon probably would have let Anakin go to Tatooine when he started having bad dreams about her. Boy, would things have turned out differently then. How far will Obi-wan push Anakin to give up his compassion? ...for Padme. Even by Ep VI Obi still encourages Luke to supress his emotions. "Bury your feelings deep down, Luke. They do you credit. But they could be made to serve the Emperor." \     Secrets should not be kept. Dooku does a perfect job of keeping Sidious' cover as Palpatine by telling Obi-wan directly what has happened, (in an uncharacteristicly Star Wars manner by enunciating a character's name sooo clearly...twice. The last time an important word was well articulated was in the '70s when Alec Guinness introduced us to the lightsaber. Alec Guinness and Christopher Lee are older, wiser actors from the stage.) "The Republic is now under the control of a Sith Lord called Darth Sidious." Now if the Jedi Council starts to think Palpatine's behavior seems a little suspicious, they will think they only think that because they think Dooku has lied to them to plant the seed of mistrust and doubt in their minds. Masterful. Padme and Anakin's relationship being kept a secret they know will destroy them. Later, Luke looses himself over the fear of loosing his sister whose identity has only recently been declassified.\ \ "No more secrets." It's an admirable motive. Now go see Sneakers. :-) 1
