Winslow Homer                                   "Right and Left"  1909                                          Oil on Canvas

Winslow Homer's painting Right and Left, at first glance appears to be two ducks.  After further examination you notice a small canoe cresting a wave containing a human figure hidden by a small cloud of smoke.  It is then that you will realize that Right and Left does not refer to the ducks at all, but rather the right and left barrels of the shotgun.  Suddenly the painting has a whole new meaning .  The question now becomes which duck is fleeing, and which has been hit?  My fourth year studio weighs heavily on deciphering the meaning of "duck" and "gun."
