Chapter 1
                                     The Beginning

I was ten years old when they first called me a Little Devil, and to tell you the truth, that's all I've ever wanted to be. The publicity people say that I was an ordinary kid who went to an ordinary school, and that's right. I wasn't a great scholar, I'll admit to that. There were to be no academic qualifications for me. Iwasn't one of those who revelled in schoolwork, indeed, I came away from school on most afternoons with a football under my arm, wondering when the next kick-about would start. In that, I don't suppose I was any different from most of the kids at Chase Lane Junior or, later, Chingford High.

My father has been the greatest influence in my career, I'm sure even Alex Ferguson wouldn't mind too much me saying that.

Sir Bobby Charlton said I was the best 11 year old he'd seen in six years rinning his school.

Still they are magic memories, as are those from the trip to Barcelona, where I met Mark Hughes, Gary Lineker and the club's manager at that time, Terry Venables.

Because there was a scout from Manchester United watching and he's going to call your Dad later about coming round to the house tonight and discuss taking you to the club for trials.

Manchester United make you feel part of a very big family. We all get on, there are no rows, no bickering, but we all want to make it.
