Interview for Inside Out web zine: http://www.insideoutzine.cjb.net
Chris - bass guy
Max - singer guy
Josh - guitar guy
B - drum guy
1. Whats Your Name and what did you do in the
band?
Chris: I was the bassist. I also recorded 2nd guitar
on the records and did some vocals, too. I also
tried to eat more hummus than the other guys. I
pictured myself as a Steve Harris (from Maiden) emulator.
You know, the guy on the bass who makes up some rock
riffs and tells the other guys what to do, all while
wearing really tight spandex pants and having long,
stringy hair.
Max: Sang, wrote super long explanations for the
lyrics, annoyed everyone
else in the band, and had stage fright for not
being behind the drums
Josh: Played guitar, encouraged lots of feedback and
mosh parts, kibbitzed on
everyone else's job, did the artwork, stressed
whenever we recorded or played
live...
B: beat the drums. had the hairiest chest and
buttocks.
2. Why did Scholastic Deth break up?
Chris: B was going to grad school and I was
moving to
San Diego to get some sun. It was sad to see the
band
go but I think it was good timing because we had
played some good shows and put out some good
seeming
records. If we would have kept going it might
have
become stale musically.
B: Yes, our paths began to diverge. But it was an
amazing experience to really keep the petal to the
metal (if you know what i mean) up until the very
end. I would like to add that "Enough Z'Nuff" may or
may not be appropriate to invoke in this instance.
3. Who were some of the best bands you've played
with?
Chris: "Best" is in the eye of the beholder, but
I
really liked playing with Jellyroll Rockheads and
Exclaim a lot, I loved their music and energy.
Max: All the shows were rad to play, we started
right when all these new
Cali bands started up like SHARP KNIFE, DYSTROPHY,
HIT ME BACJK, APATHETIC
YOUTH, OUT OF VOGUE, ESPERANZA...etc, there are so
many to list. but it was
rad to be a part of that community.
Josh: Totally... not to mention the local diehards,
IRON LUNG, ARTIMUS PYLE,
etc. It never gets old seeing them, and sharing the
stage (or the stoar, as
it were) was always awesome.
B: Yes. Yes.
4. Whats the most memorable show you've played?
Chris: Our last show at Mission Records in S.F.,
super
crowded and hot! The few shows we did down in
L.A.
were great, too. A lot of people knew our lyrics
and
were singing along and jumping all over us with
joy.
Max: Playing a reno basement with japanese bands
who got the full US DIY
experience that night (basement, snow, and about
25 drunk kids who have no
idea who you are but are ready to rock)
Josh: Reno was awesome, the Smell was always cool,
especially when we got to
spend the day at the dudes from YOUTH RIOT's place,
eating and skating
Bellflower... we never got to tour so that was one
of the best show days for
me.
B: I must concur with what my colleagues have said.
and reiterate how cool it was to play in LA the few
times we did. Thanks and love to those peeps down
there. Also lets not forget the Xtreme show at Chloe's
house in SF with that green nickelodeon spray shit and
max's head. Sorry if this an opaque reference to the
readers of this interview, but i won't explain any
further.
5. Who are some of your biggest musical
Influences?
Chris: Metallica is my major influence, believe
it or
not. That's how I learned guitar - just playing
along
with Metallica for hours. When I hear old
Metallica
records now I still get totally pumped up. It is
too
bad that they aren't so great any more, but a few
of
those first records they made are ridiculously
good.
Max: I love Heresy......just stuff that is fast
and punkm, everythign from
INFEST to DIE KREUZEN
Josh: I probably bridge the gap... I love good fast
hardcore (old AND new) and
lots of the metal, 'Tally and the rest, not to
mention some of the newer
hardcore which the other dudes don't love so much:
CATHARSIS, BOTCH, TRAGEDY,
FROM ASHES RISE although more for the music than
anything else. I guess that
goes without saying for the metal as well!
B: I always have loved fast energetic music and I love
to play the drums very fast. It is an awsome
experience to be playing in inhumanly hot
temperatures, not knowing how in the world you are
about to hit this next roll and blast beat, but by the
time are done thinking to yourself "oh shit, there is
now way I'm going to be able to pull this" you are
already doing it. In terms of playing fast drums, I
think the biggest influences for me have been Dave
Lombardo (Slayer) and Rob Proctor (Assuck).
6. How many years was Scholastic Deth together?
Chris: Hmm, I can't remember exactly, but I think
it
was about 3 years. We rocked for a while before
Max
got in the band.
Josh: I think closer to 4, as crazy as that sounds.
We started out practicing
in a room we built in the back of Epicenter in
October of '98! Never had a
vocalist or a show for almost 2 years. But it was
fun, just practicing,
playing fast... for me it was the best way to do it,
getting totally used to
B's drumming style, gaining experience and
confidence in this, my first 'real'
band... It was always weird, too, when Max would
jump on drums, I totally
couldn't play 'cuz I was just so used to playing
along to B. Maybe that's
testament to my inexperience, or maybe just dissing
Max, haha!
7. Any other comments?
Chris: I want to thank the other guys for being
in the
band with me. It was fun to start out as
something
really small and unpolished and end up a tiny bit
bigger and even more unpolished feeling!
Max: Check the site out at
www.geocities.com/scholasticdeth for the last
tidbits of info. also feb 2003 we'll have a
collection release coming out
for all those who missed out on some of it.
Josh: Thanks for your continued interest. Now that
some time has passed I'm
totally blown away by the experience. Not sure if
anything like this band
will ever happen to me again. I'm totally lucky to
have gotten the
experience, and also gotten to know three of the
smartest, most interesting
dudes around much better.
B: Screw George W. Bush.
Chris: Ok, B has it right, that guy sucks really really bad. Kind of as bad as the mean teacher Mr Hand in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. What a total jerk.
