I Prayed for Tears, but the Tears Didn't Come
The Eleventh of September, in the Year Two Thousand and One Anno Domini

The United States stands united--not separated as democrats and republicans, but united, and singing. And all it took was tens of thousands of deaths. I'm glad common sense prevails in America's time of need.

This day will go down as one of the biggest days in history. This day could change the entire country. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center have been destroyed. What an amazing day ("amazing" meaning "powerful", not "good").

During third period a faculty member let my teacher know of the events that transpired. We turned on the news and watched it live, just in time for the first building to collapse. I have never been so emotionally moved by footage as I was watching this building implode. The World Trade Center was a monument to capitalism, a testimony to American pride. It was also destroyed.

After seeing that footage, after watching life coverage and videos of the 767 hitting the World Trade Center, I was literally changed. The rest of the day went by very passively when I wasn't watching the news; suddenly geometry and chemistry and Spanish and music didn't seem worth my time. Suddenly there were bigger things going on--and they expected me to learn about perpendicular line postulates and atomic masses? Not when America is under attack. When such a life-changing event occurs, a day's school work just isn't worth a lick.

Every picture of New York City I have ever seen in my life is now inaccurate. The World Trade Center buildings were 110 stories of capitalist pride, towering over every building on the east coast of America. If I'm not mistaken, they are--were, I mean--the third tallest buildings in the world. It is hard to imagine them just not there anymore. My mother put it thus: "It looks so weird, kind of like New York is missing a tooth or something." A good way to put it.

Now there is the fear of war arising throughout the nation, and possibly throughout the world. More people have to die, apparently. But I'm not totally against it. On the contrary, I think that America needs to show the world that it's not going to take their crap, no matter how devastating their crap may be. Bush has vowed to do so--to "hunt down and punish" whoever is responsible.) Otherwise, I fully expect more terrorist attacks very soon. However, that doesn't change the fact that war is a horrible thing. And with something as big as tens of thousands of innocent American deaths at hand, the United States and its allies aren't going to take it lightly. There could even be a next world war very, very soon. This one will be different, though: instead of America having two or three nuclear bombs to drop, as I heard it at school today, "everybody and their mothers have nuclear bombs." And as if that weren't scary enough on its own, we have chemical and biological warfare to worry about.

I have heard on the radio (and I am not sure how much truth is in this statement, but I think it was from a reliable source) that a majority of congress wants George Bush to declare an all-out war as soon as tomorrow morning. With a majority wanting war, Bush is most likely going to declare war. Now, it won't necessarily be a new world war; after all, America was involved in the Gulf War and it never got to world war status. However, this, the most devastating terrorist act in history, could very well serve as a stimulus, enticing rage in America and its allies, and enticing fear and opposition in the allies of whichever country is deemed responsible.

Shifting gears a bit, here's a thought I had earlier today: people have worried about airplanes crashing in to buildings for decades now. The Twin Towers were built with a hit from a jet the size of a 707 in mind (of course, a 767 is a lot bigger, and the structures weren't able to take it). But it has never happened, especially as a terrorist act. But now that it has happened, what's stopping it from happening again? Really there is nothing we can do about it other than what we are already doing (implementing metal detectors and stuff). But apparently what we're doing now isn't enough, otherwise this never would have happened. But now that any potential terrorists can see how possible, and how disastrous an effect it can have, what's stopping someone else from attempting it. Also, this was very well planned: the terrorists hijacked planes going cross-country, so they had full tanks of gas and would thus make the biggest explosion. With this setting the standard for using airplanes as guided missiles, anyone could follow the example and cause nearly as devastating an incident.

There is a post at a message board that is believed to be by one of the terrorists. You can check it out here. It has someone predicting this event from a week ago.

This day will change history. There could be between 10,000 and 50,000 casualties resulting from this incident. All because a few lunatic terrorists thought that they could get a free ride to heaven by killing scores of thousands of evil American pigs. It's sickening. I couldn't even think straight for hours after seeing the video footage--which, I will add, was by far the most disturbing, horrific, disgusting thing I have ever seen in my life by a longshot.

There is so much more I could talk about, but I have written enough for one night.

I was going to visit the World Trade Center during my trip to New York City in March. I guess I can scratch that off the itinerary.
