Assuming that you will have allot of time to play tibia,I strongly suggest you start with a Knight. for some reason most people choose a paladin as thier first character,I did too.  I played a paladin for six months and in my opinion it was a big waste of time. A paladin is expensive to play. A knight has allot of hit points and allot of capacity, you can build up skills fairly fast and you don't have to spend money on arrows or spells. With the money you earn from your knight you can start funding your other vocations.

Knights can supply arrows and bolts for your paladin by killing distance weapon monsters, gold for runes and spells for your magic users, and low level equiptment too.

The downside of playing a knight is you wont be killing things like dragons and giant spiders any time soon.Knights kill dragons around level 35 using allot of Heavy Magic Missiles and Ultimate Healing runes, and it is not profitable to kill giant spiders.

Here is the basic equiptment you will need to buy, assuming that the sword is your weapon of choice. It will help allot if you bring as much money as you can from Rookgaard.(the prices shown are Antica prices, other worlds might be allot higher)

Two handed sword 500gp (work on shielding skill later) if too much get a
  Longsword 60gp  &   Dwarven shield 120 gp
  Spike sword 1k (one handed)

  Scale armor 100gp
Brass legs 100 gp or Chain legs 50gp
Dark helmet 200gp or Soldier helmet free,or 50gp
  Boots  free

Leveling up all characters is giong to be allot of work, here is the best Tibia advise you will ever have...

Don't fight anything that can kill you
Tibia is not like other games, you most likley will not be able to test how strong a monster is,or do too much exploring, comming face to face with a monster or going down the wrong hole can mean instant death. Tibia's "death penalty" is far too large to take chances,so that means you are better off killing trolls and rot worms until you get better equiptment to move on to something else.

Yes killing a dragon every now and then is FUN ,but thats how people die,I suggest you kill trolls and rot worms to try to get as close to level twenty as possible ,  higher levels for Sorcerers and Druids. Don't be fooled by the higher exp and treasure from harder monsters, you will find you make more money killing rot worms then killing dragons.
Stay away from Fibula dungeon, too risky to hunt there with the deamon skeletons,I suggest the swamps by dwarf bridge or the Swamp troll and rot areas by Vanore.

Vanore Swamp trolls are a great new addition to Tibia, make sure you have a heal spell if you hunt there.
Think about this for a minute, you can attempt to kill a cyclops while you are at a low level and have a high chance of dieing and you will receive 150 exp. OR you can kill 6 swamp trolls for 150 exp. and have NO chance of dieing.

Knights can hunt trolls and rot worms and collect gold, and raise thier skills.
Paladins should use spears and shields at low levels to raise thier skills.
Spell users will be fighting easy monsters for a long time,a club is a good weapon for them because they can buy a powerful warhammer for only 1k to compensate for thier low skills.Characters should always be casting spells, wether it is Light or making runes.
