  4. Last, but not least: THESE ARE NOT REAL GRAVESTONES. We would never dream of desecrating genuine headstones.

From 1941 to 1944, thousands of Jews were used as slave labor in a work camp set up in the Krakow suburb of Plaszów. For his 1993 film 'Schindler's List', Steven Spielberg recreated the Plaszow labor camp right next to its actual site in an abandoned rock quarry in a remote corner of Krakow. After filming was completed, most of the film set was destroyed. However, one of the most memorable elements of that recreated world was left intact.

Like the actual Plaszow camp from the war, the entrance to the camp in the film set was paved with Jewish gravestones. Of course, for the film, realistic replicas of the gravestones were used. For some reason, the very gravestones that were used in many memorable scenes in the film were left in the ground intact and have been sitting there untouched for 13 years.

The city of Krakow is planning to develop the land where the film set was located and will destroy whatever is still standing there, including the gravestones, by the end of this year. We have found a back way into the area, which is closed to the public, and have access to the gravestones. We believe this is a unique opportunity to own a part of film history and we are offering pieces of these gravestones for sale. The stones have various Hebrew inscriptions and Jewish symbols on them and were designed to look worn and weathered from the passage of time. We will supply a however large a piece you wish to acquire, although please bear in mind that the shipping costs can be considerable for a large piece. We will try to keep shipping charges to a minimum and will select whatever method fits your budget.

This is a rare chance to own a piece of cinema history or add a great collector's item to your film memorobilia collection. This offer will only be available for a limited time - the city of Kraków will destroy what is left of the film set by the end of this year. Don't miss your chance - order today or contact us with any questions you may have. To see pictures of the site, of the gravestones in the ground, and of the two pieces currently for sale, click here.

You can purchase pieces in one of two ways. The first is through Ebay - we will be posting auctions starting at $50 on two small pieces in the next few days. The second is through Paypal or personal check - you can email us how big a piece you want, and we'll send you a quote (cost of piece + shipping). If the price is acceptable, we'll try to get a high-quality piece (with writing and/or symbols on it) and send you pictures. Then, you can Paypal us the money or send us a check, and we'll send you the piece. Note that we can only accept checks drawn on U.S. or Polish banks at the moment.

UPDATE:

We've looked up shipping costs (using the Polish postal system) to the United States & U.K.:

Weight (Kg): Land (zl): Air (zl): Air->U.K. (zl):
<5 85 172 114
5-6 89 184 116
6-7 92 203 124
7-10 114 258 145

Notes:

  1. If you know of another shipping method which is cheaper, email us and we'll be happy to check it out and use it. We've looked at UPS, and they seem to be more expensive.
  2. Shipping prices are in zlotys. The exchange rates vary - we'll charge you the official rate (as found on Yahoo) the day we send you the bill.
  3. We cannot accept credit card transactions through Paypal right now. If you really, really want to pay by credit card (and we really, really want to sell you the piece), we might set up a Business Account (but it'll cost you - see below!)
  4. ALL FEES PAID BY BUYER! You can see Paypal's charges here. If you do a U.S. $$$ bank transfer, there are no charges, but for anything else, there will be. We expect the final agreed-on price to show up in our account, nothing less.
