ANIMALITY FARM'S OLDE ENGLISH
BABYDOLL MINI SOUTHDOWN SHEEP

Our farm in located near the Blue Ridge Mts. of Virginia.  We've been breeding Registered
"Babydoll" sheep for 10 years.  Our white, colored, and spotted flock are the pride of the farm.

In our breeding program, we strive for characteristics which include the smiling teddy bear face and docile temperament.

Originating in Sussex County,
England, these hardy little sheep became the project of John Ellman.  Around 1780 he began to standardize the breed. Flash forward to 1990.
After a 5 year search, some remaining flocks of the original style Southdown were located by Robert Mock.  A registry was formed to preserve the sheep's unique size and features.

So, while all Babydolls are Southdowns, all Southdowns are NOT Babydolls.  The modern day Southdown is much larger sheep originating from these miniatures.

In general, Babydolls are cared for like any other sheep.  This includes a yearly CD&T vaccine, hoof trimming, shearing, and wormer meds. Good pasture or hay, fresh water and access to sheep mineral are all they require for most of the year.

There are many reasons why people acquire Babydoll Sheep. They are organic weeders and brush clearers. Their temperament and size also make them wonderful for therapy programs.  They are also an attractive breed for small land owners who want the tranquility of sheep without all the challenges of the larger breeds.
