Brief Biography (a
detailed resume is also available: resume.pdf)
Dr. Scherson is an Electrical and Electronics Engineer (BSEE
1975) by training. He found his way into the world of computers in the early
1970s with the advent of the microprocessor. He pioneered a number of early
applications using microprocessors, in particular microprocessor-based digital
control systems. He was the chief architect of a fault
tolerant fuel management system for aircraft. His graduate work (MSEE 1977 in
Electronics and PhD 1983 in Applied Mathematics/Computer Science) led him to the
discovery of high performance computing, parallel computations and concurrent
computing. Since 1980 he has been a successful Computer Science
researcher/consultant combining theoretical academic work with practical
industrial applications of computer technology. He served as a Faculty
member at the University of California, Santa Barbara, Princeton University and,
currently, at the University of California, Irvine. His experience includes,
among others, Digital Control Systems, Avionic Systems, Computer Graphics, Interconnection
Networks for High Performance Computers, Computer Algorithms and
Performance Evaluation. Dr. Scherson has been successful
also in attracting research funds to support his academic research activities.
The NSF, AFOSR, NASA and JPL are some of the federal agencies funding his work.
He also has had donations/grants from private industry. Dr. Scherson is the
author of more than 80 technical papers, the editor of two technical books and holds
a couple of
patents.

R&D Project
Management
Chief project engineers need to keep track of many R&D
activities within their technical staff and teams. Often times, deep technical
knowledge is needed to manage specific teams and/or make informed engineering
decisions. An external knowledgeable consultant becomes hence handy in providing
objective technical assessments and advice in order to guide the teams and their
leaders in finding optimal solutions to the engineering problems.

New Product Definition and
Specification
From ideas to product specification the road is long and hard.
In particular when dealing with functional descriptions of products meant to
provide solutions to very particular problems. The activity of proper definition
and specification of products becomes essential in attaining a cost-effective
product that provides an efficient solution to the problem at hand. In addition,
as many problems are identified as "market needs", it becomes even
more important to have a clear statement of the need (problem) before proceeding
to defining and specifying a solution.

Preparation of Research Proposals to Support R&D
Funding for special projects may come from either one of two
different sources, namely, unsolicited proposals submitted to R&D funding
agencies and/or from subcontracting on specific projects. The preparation of
research proposals and/or R&D bids for subcontracting need to be extremely
well presented and thought out. The technical aspects need to be accurate and
novel contributed technologies need to be identified. In addition,
"paper proposals" may need to be followed by presentations and
personal contacts with the technical counterparts. Knowledge and documentation
together with clear and concise explanations are of utmost importance.

Evaluation of Business Plans/Research Proposals
Today's high technology progress has led to an explosive growth
of new start ups, some good and some not so good. The rate at which these new
companies come and go is mind boggling. A good evaluation of the technical
merits of the ideas behind proposed business plans help investors
(Venture Capital) risk their money with a higher degree of confidence.

International Marketing Support
Good International Marketing (IM) practices call, among others,
for negotiators to understand their potential clients' culture and, if possible,
speak their language. The conjunction of knowledge of cultural trends, languages
and technology proves to be an asset in any International Marketing effort.
International Marketing teams will have a lead start over their competitors if
they understand their potential client's need because they understand their
culture, language and market needs.

Support in Legal Digital
Technology-related Issues
High Technology progress has led also to a surge in litigation
related to intellectual property rights as well as abuses of the technology that
lead to civil and/or criminal prosecution. Law experts increasingly need experts
to assist them in their investigations, interpretations of facts, electronic evidence recovery, expert witness testimony, and litigation support.
