Growth Form: Biennial herbs from thickened roots.
Stems: Upright, branched, smooth or hairy, up to 5 feet tall.
Leaves: Alternate, pinnately compound, the leaflets oval to ovate, rounded or pointed at the tip, rounded at the base, toothed, smooth or hairy, up to 3 inches.
Flower Arrangement: Flowers many, borne in compound umbels.
Flowers: Yellow, up to 1/6 inch across, borne on slender stalks.
Petals: 5, yellow, free from each other.
Stamens: 5
Pistil: Ovary inferior; styles 2.
Fruits: Oval, smooth, up to 1/4 inch long.
Discussion:The time of flowering is May to October. The Parsnip is associated with dogbane (Apocynum cannabinum), common thistle (Cirsium arvense), snakeroot (Eupatorium altissimum), and curly dock (Rumex crispus).
