The whole installation… developing month by month
The installation consists of several different
parts. Twelve oval discs and a small globe, which halves the year, constitute
the main part of the calendar. Each student of the art class designed
individually the front and the back of one disc (typography and an individual
picture). The horizontal position of all the discs represents the “time zero”
of the year 2000. They are fixed in this position in a ring, which has a
diameter of 1m. The running month is put in a vertical position.
There was a project at school where the
students were asked to write down their hopes and wishes for the millennium on
pieces of paper. Those notes, about 500, were hung up on a big window in the
hall, so as to be shown to the public. The contents of the wishes were various.
They hung there for one week and every day during that week there was a picture
taken of the “wall of wishes”. After that week all the notes were tied together
and hung on the ceiling of the hall. The pictures were framed and also
presented there.
The calendar was meant to be an active
calendar, so in addition every month was set to music. When it is silent in
school, you are able to hear a subliminal noise, coming out of a hidden tape
recorder.
When you enter the school the topicality of the
calendar is visible every day. On the ceiling, of a height of about 3m, hangs
the topical date of the month, which is updated every day by our caretaker Mr.
Koinzack. A halogen spotlight (sponsored by the company Elektro – Pritsch)
lights every topical month.
