4 July, 1944: The 83rd division attacks s-se along a road with a small hamlet and overlying hill being the objective.

"...the (VII) corps commander, Lawton Collins, faced a taask of extreme difficulty. To reach its ultimate objective on the St Lo-Coutances road, the corps must advance ten miles down a corridor barely two miles wide flanked by the marshes of the River Taute and the Prairies Marecageuses de Gorges. The drainage ditches as a result of the incessant rain of the previous weeks were swollen to the brim; cross-country movement by vehicles was impossible; efficient fire support by tanks a pious hope. Furthermore, the way was barred by first class troops, the 17th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment and a parachute regiment under experienced commanders. There was no possible alternative to frontal attack."

--Normandy Bridgehead: Ballantine's Illustrated History of World War II

This battle is loosely based on the attack by the American 83rd Division on the 4th of July, 1944. In the actual battle the width of the front between the marshes would have been two miles or roughly 3000 meters in Combat Mission terms, so this 880x800 meter CMBO mapboard represents a 'slice' of that day's fighting.

In the actual battle there had been planned air support but it rained that day. The Americans attacked anyway. They lost 10% of their strength on the first day, including an entire batallion which disappeared when it tried a flank manuever through the western marshes.

Two miles along the road s-se of the jumpoff point for the overall attack was the village of Sainteny. In the actual battle the 83rd fought all day and only managed to take a hamlet about halfway to Sainteny. So imagine that it is about an hour before dusk and this mapboard represents that hamlet, which was small enough that it went unnamed in the Ballantine account.

The scenario is mainly designed to be played as Germans against the computer.

Beginners: Play as Americans against the computer Germans.
Advanced: Play as Germans against the computer Americans. (Recommended)
PBEM: Should be played both ways ('mirrored game').

As Germans you command elements of the 6th Fallschirmjager Regiment and reinforcements from the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment will be arriving shortly. You have the terrain and a good number of minefields to make the going tough on the Americans. Expect a lot of American artillery, particularly if you are playing a pbem opponent.

With 10 300-point flags in on top of the hill, the American forces should attack toward that location fairly quickly, even if they're commanded by the AI.
With the Americans you have a great deal of firepower from your FO units. This one should be a cakewalk. Just get some idea of where the Germans are concentrated, then sit back and let them have it with the big guns brought in by your FOs.

You probably don't have to pay a lot of attention to detail on your infantry moves. Simply 'group move' them toward the hilltop and pound the Germans with your artillery and it should be an easy win.

You start out with a couple of 155mm FOs and some scout cars with a cavalry platoon. Shortly a reinforced batallion should be arriving with which you should sweep the hill and the hamlet underlying it clear of German resistance. Remember to just pound with that artillery before getting seriously engaged.
