Ch. 1-3 Study Guide
The Great Gatsby
1.With the influence of the dress her personality has also undergone a change

Myrtle has a whole different personality when she is around Tom. When she is with her husband George Wilson she really doesnt show her love for him. This is because she is having an affair with Tom, and it is even clear right in front of Georges eyes. Ill meet you by the news-stand on the lower level.(17) As soon as she meets up with Tom she turns into a little rich snob woman. Already spending Toms money, as if shes been rich her whole life. She acts like shes too good for just a plain yellow cab, and need to turn down three of them just to get a new lavender one. Myrtle has got tom wrapped around her finger when she says she wants a dog as well. When Mrs. McKee tells Myrtle how adorable her dress is, she just acts like its some old dress she had sitting around for a decade. Its just a crazy old thingI just slip it on sometimes when I dont care what I look like.(20) She acts like she has been a rich for years upon years. But really in fact she only acts like this when she is around Tom. Every place she goes she changes her attitude just like her dresses. Its a whole new side of Myrtle that her husband George would never see.

2.The carelessness of the rich (attitude, automobile, etc.)

During chapter 1 the book introduces many rich snobs who have the worst attitudes among all people. For instance Daisy and Jordan Baker. When Nick came to greet them the two lazy women were P-paralyzed with happiness.(6) Which in their eyes it meant they were so overjoyed and excited that they couldnt even move to get up. You can tell that these women have no cares in their lives whatsoever. They were so caught up in their rich lifestyles, that they never had to anything that required any sort of work. They wanted to plan something special for the longest day of the year. What do people plan.(8) That one statement shows that the two individual girls have never done a single plan for anything in their lives. That shows how careless they are to the world around them. They are too stuck in themselves to even give other people the time of day.

3.Rumors and theories about characters. Gossip and its impacts on people

There are many theories made about Gatsby because no one has really talked to him at any of his exclusive parties. One of the first theories about him is Well, they say hes a nephew or a cousin of Kaiser Wilhelms. Thats where all his money comes from. (21) Lucille made a theory that Gatsby bought her a new dress because he doesnt want any trouble with any of his guests. She thinks that he just wants them to keep coming and enjoying his parties. The more gossip, the more the towns people keep making up new drama. Its what keeps them flowing everyday, and without it they would have nothing to talk about. Another theory was Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once. (29)But Lucille disagreed and said Its more than that he was a German spy during the war.(29)The last theory was from another girl who said It couldnt be that, because he was in the American Army during the war.(29) So all of the people who attend Gatsbys exclusive parties have no idea who he is, where he came from, and what he does. So even though they dont know which theory is true, they just keep on making new ones up. Gossip impacts people because once you start it becomes an ongoing cycle because it becomes a habit.
