Attached are two images of the cavalry sabre carried by PVT Jefferson T. G. GATES, Co. A, 5th SC Cavalry, who was killed at the Battle of Trevilian Station, VA, on 12 Jun 1864. This is the handle

and this is the full view of same

J. Gates is inscribed on the hilt of the sword. Also inscribed on the sword is the name A. Davidson. The sword originally belonged to Jeff Gates. When he was killed at Trevillians, the sword was either picked up or re-issued to A. Davidson. A. Davidson belonged to the 10th Georgia Cavalry, who was also at the Battle of Trevillians.

If you know more about Jeff Gates and A. Davidson, especially where Jeff might be buried, please contact Laura at . I know that many of the dead from that battle were buried in unmarked graves in Trevillians so more than likely that's where he ended up.
